"He had a beautiful, gentle soul," said Bruce Millan, who directed the production in 1972.

Mr. Newton was 6 feet 4 and 260 pounds Jesse "about the size Newton of the theater's front door," said a review and was a natural choice for the sympathetic farmhand. Jesse H. Newton 60, died of congestive heart failure Sunday in his sleep at his Detroit home, said his brother, Louis. "My favorite picture of Jesse," said Millan, producing director of the Detroit Repertory Theatre, "is this big man sitting in the hay with hands between his knees in childlike fashion laughing.

"He had such a nice sympathy, a softness to him, and in a big man that was a rare kind of quality. He quickly got the audience on his side." Mr. Newton debuted as Lennie in March 1972. Actor James Earl Jones played the role on Broadway years later. Over the years, Mr.

Newton appeared in several plays at Detroit Repertory Theatre. Among his bestremembered roles was as the South African shopkeeper John Kumalo in the Kurt Weill-Maxwell Anderson South African musical, "Lost in the Stars." He played the leading role of Yank Smith in "The Hairy Ape" and also appeared in "The Threepenny Opera," "Morning's at Seven," "The Petrified Forest," "Both Your Houses" and, most recently, "Disability: A Comedy." "Once, he had a bit part in a movie and I talked with him about Hollywood," his brother said. "But he said no, he was a local actor, and that was all he was ever going to be, and he was very happy about that." When he wasn't acting, Mr. Newton was a traffic supervisor for the American Red Cross. He recently retired after almost 20 years.

Born in Detroit, Mr. Newton attended Miller High School and served two years in the Navy. He began acting at Concept East Theatre, about 10 years after his discharge. He began his association with Detroit Repertory Theatre around 1970. Besides his brother, Mr.

SZYCHULSKI Cystic fibrosis patient never gave up laughter BY MARIAN DOZIER Free Press Staff Writer Even though it would often send her into bone-rattling coughing fits, Alicia Marie Maas loved to laugh.

Her laughter was beautiful, deep and resonant, and helped her deal with her affliction, family and friends said. Mrs. Maas, 28, died Tuesday at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit of complications from cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that clogs the lungs with muAlicia cus. Maas "She had this unbelievable, hearty laugh that was very contagious, the kind that came right up from the toes," said Patty Peek, who met Mrs. Maas 16 years ago at a cystic fibrosis camp.

"She'd see the humor i in situations, in her illness and use it to carry her through all the hassles of the disease." Mrs. Maas of Madison Heights was a 1982 graduate of Warren High School and attended Macomb Community College. The Detroit native was an active member with the all-volunteer Michigan Pulmonary Disease Camp which provides camping experiences for children with cystic fibrosis at Camp Onkoi Benek, near Battle Creek. Her loves were simple, said Terry Maas, her husband I of six years and two days. She loved the camp, growing flowers especially African violets their two dogs, "and me," he said.

He knew that she would die young, SO every moment was precious, he said. She had planned her funeral, right down to the five rock 'n' roll songs that would play, and the pink with white lace dress she would wear. She told her husband to buy an inexpensive casket so he could throw a party for their friends after the funeral. "She was just a remarkable woman, unbelievable. She had control over everything.

That's one of her things: being organized and ready for anything," Terry Maas said. She was on a long waiting list at a Pittsburgh hospital for a double lung transplant, Terry Maas said. Mrs. Maas also is survived by sisters, Brenda Leguminia and Colleen Weaver, and her parents, Alfred and Bernadine Leguminia. LOTTIE Sept.
