10A The Detroit News 1 Monday, Mjv 25, n8 Obituaries Prudent 'Papa' Blancke, farmer Raymond E. Dion, spent life teaching I Iall of Fame for coaching. Born in Ishpeming, Mr. Dion served in the Navy during World War II. He was stationed on ships in both the European and Pacific theaters.

Raymond and Mary Dion, who celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in March, met at a dance at Harvard University in 1942 and married six months later. "Everybody said it would never work," his wife said with a laugh. "But it did. We were very happy." Students remembered Mr. Dion fondly.

"He was very firm," Mary Dion said. "He demanded that his students do their best and they came to appreciate that." In addition to teaching history and social studies, Mr. Dion coached basketball, f(H)tball, track and cross country. In 1963, he was elected Warren's "Teacher of the Year" and was inducted into the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame. "We are very lucky," she said. After years of hauling lettuce, rhubarb and other produce to the Eastern Market in Detroit, Mr. Blancke retired at age 60.

He spent the next 42 years tilling vegetable gardens as a hobby. I le also used the land to help put two granddaughters through college. The girls sold tomatoes at the side of the road, saving enough money to pay for school. Mr. Blancke is survived by his daughter, 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

His wife, Martha, preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 2-9 pm today in the DS. Temrowski and Sons Funeral Home, 3xx9 Hoover, Warren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

"He was tooling around in the field until just last year," said David Temrowski, a family friend. "I le was amazing." Mr. Blancke, who bought land that became the city's most fertile 50 years ag( died Thursday, May 21, 1998, of congestive heart failure in his home. I le was 102. Mr.

Blancke was born in Schuifer-skapelle, West Flanders, Belgium, in April 1896. He moved his family from Kansas to Warren in 1937 with hopes of turning about 50 acres into cash crops.
