Louis Freeman Recycling-company founder World War II veteran Louis Freeman, who worked in the scrap-metal recycling industry for 60 years and was still active in his company, died Wednesday of heart failure at Sinai Hospital in Detroit Mr. Freeman was born in Detroit and was a 1934 graduate of Northern High School. He founded the Metals Co. Inc. on Fort Street in Detroit.

He was a member of B'nai B'rith, past president of the Brandeis Bowling League and volunteered for the Allied Jewish Campaign. Mr. Freeman, 80, who lived in West Bloomfield Township, loved to sing and dance. He and his wife were active for years in the Cotillion Club, which sponsored monthly formal dinner dances. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Andrea Freeman; sons Fred and Richard, and three grandchildren.

Leonard de Paur Conductor, arranger NEW YORK Leonard de Paur, 83, a conductor who founded Lincoln Center's Out of Doors festival and served as the institution's director of community relations for nearly 20 years, died Saturday. As a conductor and arranger, Mr. de Paur worked with symphonies and collaborated on recordings, including the opera "Four Saints in Three Acts" and excerpts from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess." He was also the musical director for the 1952 revival of "Four Saints in Three Acts" on Broadway.

Rumer Godden British novelist LONDON Rumer Godden, 90, a British novelist whose years in India provided inspiration for some of her best-known works, died Sunday. Ms. Godden, who published her 21st novel, "Cromartie vs. The God Shiva," last year, had her first major success with her third novel, "Black Narcissus," published in 1939. "The River," published in 1949, was one of her most acclaimed books and was made into a film by Jean Renoir in 1951.
