1 4B DETROIT FREE OCTOBER 14, 1998 Cleo: Popular astrologer's energy; heart larger than life BY MOLLY ABRAHAM Free Press Staff Writer Growing up with a celebrity mother wasn't easy, said Ramona Opperman, daughter of the astrologer Cleo, who was a household word in metro Detroit in the 1970s and '80s. "Oh, gosh, if she would just be like everybody else," Opperman recalls of her childhood reaction to having a parent who wasn't at all like her friends' parents. "Mom was so unique, SO different. You'd go places, and people knew Cleo her. Now we really appreci- Abuin ate that.

You Cleo Abuin never knew who was going to be at the house." Her last name, Abuin, was not nearly as well-known. She died Sunday at age 70 of complications from cancer at Spectrum Health East in Grand Rapids. She had moved to Grand Haven from her longtime residence in Dearborn Heights to be closer to her daughter. Even those who knew the largerthan-life Cleo during the astrology craze probably didn't know she was a talented artist or that she had been a rodeo rider after graduating from Cass Technical High School and attending the Society of Arts Crafts. Her maiden name was Korgis.

"She rode Brahman bulls and broncs," said her daughter. "Her dad had a farm, and she and her younger sister followed the circuit for a couple of years." Cleo's father planted crops by moon phases on his Taylor farm. That sparked her interest in astrology. She compiled a list of prominent clients and those she hoped would be clients in her home office. She was a frequent guest on just about every local TV and radio show and was on everybody's society party list.

Cleo dressed the part, in vibrantly colored caftans, with a matching jewel pasted on her forehead. Her straight dark hair was parted in the center and flowed well down her back, giving her an exotic look. She attracted many celebrity ents, from Max Fisher's wife, Marjorie, and Henry Ford Il's daughter Charlotte Ford to singer Diana Ross. "She had a big heart and would have given you her last nickel," said Marjorie Fisher. Yiannis Karimalis, a Southfield hairdresser, and his wife, Pat, were Cleo's business partners for five years during the '80s in a Greektown boutique, "and we socialized a lot together.

She was a very colorful woman, and we were very close friends for many years. We are going to miss her." Mrs. Abuin, who was cremated, is also survived by daughter Diana Abuin; a son, William; two grandchildren, and two sisters. Her ashes, said her daughter Ramona, will be put "in a cloisonne jar, blue like one of her gowns. It reminds me of Mom." A private memorial service will be held on Sunday.

Michael Licata: Accountant was a 'diehard Spartan' BY MOLLY ABRAHAM Free Press Staff Writer Michael Licata, "a die-hard Spartan," according to his wife, Jill, was an active recruiter at his alma mater for his accounting firm. He graduated magna cum laude from Michigan State University in 1973. He wanted the best and brightest to come to work at Deloitte Touche, where he was a partner in charge of the Michigan tax department, said his wife of 25 years, who attended both high school and college with her Michael husband. Mr. Licata, Licata 47, of Plym- Michael Licata outh, who was diagnosed with cancer in June and tried everything he could to overcome it, died Sunday at Harper Hospital in Detroit.

"He gave it his all, radiation and chemotherapy, said his wife. He had worked for the accounting firm since he started as an intern for its predecessor, Haskins Sells. Mr. Licata was a member of the Detroit Regional Chamber, the Economic Club of Detroit, Detroit Athletic Club and Orchard Lake Country Club as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. His interests included working with the Cornerstone Schools in Detroit.

His wife said her husband and son, Michael, "collected ballparks They traveled to as many as they could, and got to a good portion of them." Mr. Licata pitched at Cooley High School and during his first year at MSU. Just prior to his illness, the family enjoyed a trip to Italy. Mr. Licata is also survived by a daughter, Julie; his mother, Verna Licata, and two sisters.
