THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 1991DETROIT FREE PRESS 3C U.S. track stars battle odds, conditions for world team spots ics also made a muted threat that U.S. membership might be jeopardized if Reynolds were permitted to compete. Reynolds, holder of the 400-meter world record, was banned for two years by the IAAF last November after testing positive for anabolic steroids at a meeting in Monte Carlo. The top three finishers here qualify for the World Championships Aug.

24-Sept. 1 in Tokyo. Here are some events to watch for: Men's 100 meters: World-record holder Lewis battles his training partner, Burrell. Women's 100 meters: Evelyn Ashford has her hands full with Marion Jones, a 15-year-old sophomore from Oxnard, Calif. Jones recently lowered the national prep 100-meter 11.17 seconds, the third-fastest time; run by a woman in the world this year, Men's 200 meters: Burrell, perhaps the fastest man in the world, goes hp against Michael Johnson, the 200-nje-: ter specialist.

Women's 1,500 meters: Decker Slaney, 32, attempts a comeback after four Achilles tendon operations in the past 13 months. BY MICHELLE KAUFMAN Free Press Sports Writer NEW YORK The Big Apple is staging another star-spangled homecoming party. This one doesn't involve ticker tape or Gen.

Norman Schwarzkopf, but by athletic standards, it's just as significant and every bit as red, white and blue. For the first time since the 1988 Olympic Trials, nearly every top American track-and-field athlete joined Wednesday for a meet on U.S. soil. The USAMobil Track and Field Championships will continue through Saturday at Downing Stadium in Randalls Island, off New York City. Heat sheets read like a who's who of track.

Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell. Mary Decker Slaney and PattiSue Plumer. Butch Reynolds and Steve Lewis. Lynn Jennings and Francie Larrieu-Smith. In first-day results, Dan O'Brien ran the fastest unofficial 100 meters in decathlon history, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee began assault on her world record in the heptathlon, blistering the field in her heat to win the 100-meter hurdles in 12.77.

O'Brien, running in the third heat of the men's decathlon 100, clocked 10.23 seconds. But the time did not count as a world record because officials failed to have a wind gauge at trackside. Meanwhile, Jackie Joyner-Kersee's coach and husband, Bob Kersee, lashed out at what he called ridiculous conditions, complaining about the long-jump runway and the high-jump pit, which last was used for a major track and field competition in 1966. Repairs still were being made on the long-jump runway Wednesday. Also, the International Amateur Athletic Federation said it had instructed U.S.

track and field officials to prohibit track star Butch Reynolds from running in the U.S. Championships today. The governing body of world athlet Track ii'ip field USAMobil Track and Field Championships. WHERE: Downing Stadium, Randalls bland, New York City. WHEN: Through Saturday.
