NCEVSR 7. 1991 CETHOiT FREE PFESS 73 TH II. .11 I L.l.1.11 x. Umi-UM I I .1 HUH 11 New mayor in Flint got cross section of support By Christopher Cook fm Press Staff Writer FLINT The first thing Woodrow Stanley did after stepping away from the podium at his first news conference as Flint's mayor-elect was to pose for a picture. It was a fairly routine gesture, but the photographic tableau also helped explain why Stanley had just trounced Mayor Mat JOHN MUNSON, Associated Press Woodrow Stanley, Flint's mayor-elect, holds daughter Heather's hand Tuesday after announcing victory over incumbent Matthew Collier.

Stanley's wife, Reta, and daughter Jasmine, below the outstretched arms, join in the celebration. thew Collier by more than 8,000 votes. Stanley, who is black, was ringed by a phalanx of white labor leaders. Stanley's Slate panel to lake a look at euthanasia EUTHANASIA, from Page IB pursue initiative campaigns in California, Oregon and Florida, she said. B.

Kirk Robinson, a leader in Washington's euthanasia campaign, said the measure "brought a national spotlight to people's need and desire to control their deaths. I think it is just the first shot and we will get aid-in-dying legislation in this country eventually." Neither Kevorkian nor his attorney Geoffrey Fieger could be reached Wednesday for comment. But Kevorkian told WDIV-TV (Channel 4) he would like to see a new medical specialty doctors who help people commit suicide. This morning, a subcommittee of the Michigan House Judiciary Committee will begin reviewing Dillingham's bill and another that would create a commission of doctors, ethicists, lawyers, senior citizens and others to discuss the issue and suggest how best to deal with it. Opponents of legal euthanasia may not wait.

"They will study and study and study. They've had the bill since March and it's taken two more deaths and a vote in another state to get them going," said Dillingham. The Senate approved the bill in March and sent it the House. Barbara Listing, president of Right to Life of Michigan, said: "We don't think a commission is needed, but the Legislature could pass the Dillingham bill now and still set up a commission." Dillingham hinted he might try to force his bill from the Judiciary Committee to the House floor. "We're putting together a plan that I think will resolve it clearly within a week." An Associated Press nationwide poll last week indicated strong national support for permitting assisted suicide.

Sixty percent of the 1,006 adults interviewed were in favor and 24 percent against, with the rest unsure. The Associated Fress contributed to this report. Clair, will be remembered in services Saturday. Michael Carabelli, 15, of Sterling Heights, was found Sunday miles away from the partially submerged wreckage of his father's 30-foot Wellcraft speedlxvit. John Carabelli is missing and presumed drowned.

The two were taking the boat from St. Clair Shores to Al-gonac for winter storage. The teenager was a sophomore at Henry Ford II High School in Sterling Heights. John Carabelli, 38, of Shelby Township was a distribution manager for the Detroit Pure Milk Co. in Detroit.

He also had been a member of the Detroit Police Reserves. Michael is survived by his mother, Sandra Zurro; stepfather, Richard Zurro; grandparents Shirley Carabelli and Frances and Nevlin Osewalt, and sisters Nicole Carabelli and Kelly Ward. In addition to Shirley Carabelli and Nicole Carabelli and Kelly Ward, Mr. Carabelli is survived by three brothers and four sisters. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

(Terry) Zintl, 44, Time magazine's Rome bureau chief, died Tuesday at his office in Rome. The cause of death was not disclosed. Mr. Zintl joined Time in 1984 and was named Rome bureau chief in 1990. From 1982 to 1984, he was Sunday editor and then deputy managing editor of the New York Daily News.

He also worked at the Detroit Free Press and the News Journal of Wilmington, Del. CUNTCX A. JACKSCH, 82. of Detroit, a longtime Detroit physician and surgeon, die from a bladder infection Saturday a.yHarper Hospital in Detroit. Born in he earned his medical degree in 1937 from Meharry Medical College in Nashville.

As one of the few black physicians in West Virginia in the 1940s, he often was called into the mountains to tend the sick. He established a Detroit practice in the 1950s and retired in 1984. "I called him the charity doctor he never turned anyone away," said his wife, Helen. Dr. Jackson also is survived by a son, Stanley; daughter, Clintona; three sisters and four grandchildren.

A half-hour family hour precedes 12:30 p.m. services today at the James H. Cole Funeral Home, 2624 W. Grand Detroit. Interment will be in the mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit.

Suzanne Cobb Jackson, 69, an expert on antiques, died of cancer Saturday at her Grosse Pointe home. In the summers she resided at a home in Deer Isle, Maine. Mrs. Jackson was a volunteer gallery aide and member of the Founders Society of the Detroit Institute of Arts. She also was a member of the Detroit Historical Society Guild and a founding member and former president of the Pettipointe chapter of the Questers.

She spoke about antiques before women's groups and Quester meetings. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband, Gilder D. Jackson III; daughters Marka Larrabee, Toni Truesdale, Pamela Truesdale and Elliott Jackson; sons Joseph Truesdale, Alexander Truesdale and Gilder D. Jackson IV, two sisters, and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today at Christ Church, 61 Grosse Pointe Grosse Pointe. Burial will be in Deer Isle, Maine. John And Michael Carabelu, a father and son who disappeared Saturday during an outing on Lake St. "I am very pleased that I got such a a large turnout of white voters, because it says resoundingly that I have been elected mayor of all Flint," said Stanley, 40, a city councilman for eight years.

There was a strong undercurrent of voter dissatisfaction in Flint and nearby communities. By almost identical margins as in the Flint race, voters in suburban Burton threw out Mayor Jane Nimcheski in favor of Charles Smiley. In Ritchfield Township, voters recalled Supervisor Frank Kolinski. In each case, the races drew the largest voter turnouts on record and recorded the largest percentages and raw numbers by which incumbents were defeated, said Genesee County Clerk John Trecha. "I don't think it's coincidental at all.

I think it's a clear anti-incumbent trend," Trecha said. "Matt Collier got what he de served," said Joe Duplanty after the picture-taking session. Duplanty, president of UAW Local 659, was part of a group of a half-dozen key union locals that organized fund-raisers and urged votes for Stanley. Ron Jansson, a Local 659 official, said: "The issue here wasn't race. It's hunger.

And hunger is color-blind. People need jobs. Black, white, it doesn't matter. The issues are the same." He added: "If John Engler didn't get the message from here tonight that a lot of people are damned angry, then he had better look out." Unemployment in Flint has been around 12 percent. One voter Stanley did not get was Jack Curler, a GM retiree who was shopping Wednesday in the Courtland Center mall.

He said he voted for Collier, though it makes little difference who wins. "Nothing's going to change much anyway," Curler said. victory was attributed Wednesday to support from a cross section of labor and political leaders and a campaign message that painted the 33-year-old Collier, who is white, as a puppet of big business who hadn't done much in four years as mayor. The final tally was 25,946 votes, or almost 60 percent, for Stanley and 17,686 for Collier. Stanley won 25 percent of the vote in some primarily white areas where he had been expected to receive only 10 percent.

Name-dropping leaves East Detroiters puzzled The possibility is expected to come up at Tuesday's vote also caused confusion for a group of northeast Detroiters seeking to detach from the mother city to become East Pointe. The group has scheduled a meeting Tuesday to come up with a new name. How about East Detroit? "I don't think so," chairman Doug Allor said Wednesday. EASTPOINTE, from Page IB "East Detroit I mean Eastpointe Auto Care," manager Paul Gatto answered the phone. At Eastpointe Kitchen Bath Inc.

co-owner Nancy Campoli said she and her husband just happened to pick the name when their firm opened about four years ago because it "seemed to flow with 'kitchen and Whatever the city's name, it will have the same zip code 48021. George Lawroski, who pushed the name change, said East Detroit's 35,282 residents suffered by being associated with Detroit. Voters rejected his proposals to change the name to Erin Heights in 1984 and East Pointe in 1987. The East Detroit School District is separate from the city and it would be up to its board to initiate any change. MILLER WENTZEL VIRGINIA ANN Nov.
