Sullivan says. "We find that if it's a really good act for the kids the adults will like it, too." The rehearsal continues. Ray Block, pipe in one hand and baton in the other, tells his orchestra to "take it over, without the drums." A lady appears under, a pile of hats. "Where do these go?" she asks. Sullivan points to a table.

A singer comes in the wrong door. The mike boom man makes a quick adjustment, and things roll along. Sullivan shows young impressionist Barry Blake how Eddie Cantor skipped across the stage and Barry does it again and better. Then there's a break for dinner. Helen Hayes makes a gracious entrance, followed by Louie Armstrong and Tex McCreary.

They're seated in "celebrity row" where they "11 be introduced by Sullivan. There are some empty seats clean-cut servicemen are whisked up from the back rows. Ray Block cues the orchestra and Sullivan does his special chore cueing in the studio audience applause. Sullivan goes out to his millions of fans. FRIDAY: "Playhouse of Stars" (2) at 9:30 stars Clare Trevor, while "Star Stage" (4) presents "Marshal and the Mob" all about the wild, wild.west.

It's "Ethel and Albert" (7) at 10, followed on the same channel by Ed Mc-Kenzie's "Musicade," local song and dance variety. SATURDAY: WXYZ carries "Tosca" from the Metropolitan Opera House at 2 with Reneta Tebaldi, Richard Tucker and Leonard Warren. "Stage Show" (2) at 8 4 Herschell Hart Detroit -Area Vital Statistics 3 P.M. 7 Heartthrob Theater NBC Matinee Theater 2 The Big Payoff 3:30 P.M. 2 News consultant" on the Sullivan staff, but like most Sullivan associates he gets into all sorts of projects connected with the show.

In his words, "Ed does the booking of acts, from Istanbul to Brooklyn, and on Tuesdays we sit down with him and absorb his books for Sunday's show." "With Ed we decide on the settings whether to make some new stuff or rearrange the old trees and doorways. Then Ed comes in on how to do magic acts for television, with dancers on the way to put their best foot forward, and singers on how to sing." Watching a Sullivan rehearsal you can see the master's touch. He adjusts lights, suggests camera angles, moves the magician's stand a foot this way or that, gets the closeup of the little bird, and follows the progress on the monitor. Others around the theater seem lo fall into his attitude hand in chin, elbow in hand. We wonder if they have to? If it's a really funny routine, the boss breaks into loud guffaws.

And you see a smile seldom seen on the screen. If the act doesn't seem to be clicking, he turns around and says something to Mar-low Lewis, his co-producer but somehow things work out smoothly. It's the acts that keep the Sullivan show high up in the ratings, snowing under spectaculars and top comedy acts. "We're a cradle for show business acts." Leddy says. "You see most of these people on our show first." As Sullivan said in Detroit last May, "We don't want to send anything into your homes that will cause embarrassment." There might be a slip, from time to time, but the same mistake doesn't happen twice.

There's usually something for the kids in each show, 2 Bob Crosby Show Lotman, Baby, 421 Frazier, River Rouge. Dale Meyers, 17184 Fairport; Mar- 9:30 A.M. DEATHS lene McCarty, 18119 Joann. Luptowski, Audrey 12619 E. Warren.
