We spent Saturday wandering around the Great Grey Pile that is the venerable Met, and encountered as fascinating a group of radio workers as we've seen in some time. Putting together the words and people, over and above those in the actual opera, that go into the broadcast is a week-long task. It begins to reach its climax Saturday morning when producer Geraldine Souvaine and her associates. Jay Harrison, George Voutsas and Anthony Sav-nella, converge on the opera house with scripts and people. The 60-page script covers Milton Cross' comments from his box in the Golden Horseshoe, the Opera News segment, and the Opera Quiz, as well as assorted promotions and announce 56 Evening Panorama 7:15 P.M.

Baby. 4402 Torrey. Roy Cataldo, 12300 Laing: Therese fully scripted. We bumbled into three operatic rehearsals in lobbies, corridors and remote rooms before we caught up with the Opera News rehearsal. It had been under way for some time, and we were somewhat perplexed.

Lawrence Tibbett was addressing a rather heavy set male as "My dear Helen Hayes." We soon learned that Miss Hayes wras busy rehearsing for a TV program and was expected to come dashing in prior to broadcast time. The broadcast of the Opera News from the Opera Guild lounge where 40 to 60 patrons crowd the gilded room, the second intermission feature, comes from a rehearsal room on the third floor. Milton Cross annotates from a small glassed-in-studio at the back of the Golden Horseshoe. Seen from our box adjacent to the stage he appeared to be floating in space, a head, shoulders, arms and microphone 'way in the distance. An engineer in the box flips switches, transporting the radio audience to the other rooms in the opera house.

It's catch-as-calch-can radio. The engineer's equipment on an old table, directors seated at small stools, script girls busily Thompson, 12618 Frankfort. Morosky, Steven 26548 Eton, Dear stieoer. 1377 Bedford. Grosse Point.
