notice at the Ses sion Room on Saturday evening the 9th hist Chakles Jjckson vvas called to the Chair and Sheldon appointed Secretary Thu object of the meeting having been sta ted it was Resolved That a committee of five per sons bo appointed to up resolutions ex pressivc of their views and submit them to Ibis meeting and M'Knight Chamiuey Hurlbut John Scott A Canmil and John Garrison were appointed said committee The committee having reported the iul ow ing resolutions they were unanimously adopt ctTas the sense of this meeting Believing that the best interests ot that great portion of the community which conMitutus the laboring classes are intimately compet ed with and deeply involv'd tn the char acter of our legislation whether local or imneral that the individuals composing hose classes arc oftctKtnade to contribute to the public burthens a greater portion ol tliuir time and means than should in justice be required from them and also that it is among the first duties which we owe to our fcllow eitizcns and to ourselves to pro mulgate our principles on these heads and to labor to clfect such alterations in exist imr laws and practices as we doire there Resolved That it i our opinion that the existing system of jurisprudence is very de fective inasmuch as almost the entire expense of it falls upon the laboring clas uts who are deprived of that time which is their property to serve on juries and attend as witnesses without adequate compensation and in al most every instance to do the business of their more wealthy neighbors Resolved as the sense of this meeting that a law should be passed providing that jurors and witnesses in court shall receive a just compensation for their time and ex (ani ses as such Resolved That our militia system is equal ly defective requiring from us a large sacri fice of lime without producing a benefit ade quate to that sacrifice mid that the system should be so changed as to exempt the great body of the citizens from frequent parades and at the same time tn secure proper organ ization and efficiency in times of emergency Resolved ''hat we deem the operation of our Road Taxes to be unjust because une qual The making of roads increases the value of property in a greater ratio than it gives an accommodation to us We consid er road taxes upon the footing of all other taxes for the general good and therefore cannot acquiesce nt the limitation of them to a certain number of days Resolved That laws conferring upon cer tain individuals priv'leges which ate denied to others commonly called incorporation acts are to an extent anti republican in their na ture and have a tendency to make the rich richer mid the poor poor er We therefore think that a tax upon stocks of every kind would be not just in itself but ex pedient under our present circumstances We also arc of tlie opinion that capital put but nt interest should be subject to taxa tion Resolved That the and mystery which attend our law affairs and the conse quent protraction and expense of the business of our courts are mainly to be attributed to the barbarous language in which pur laws are drawn up and passed and that it is the dttlv of us all to urge that our stat utes be drawn in plain language such as can be generally understood and which even a professional lawyer must admit to mean the same thing at all times Resolved That we all feel a deep interest in procuring a representation from the county of Wayne to the Legislative Council of men who are competent and who arc willing to aid in effecting the objects which we have in view and that we will use our best en deavors to secure the election of such men The following resolution was then adopted Resolved That this meeting appoint a committee to consist of nine persons who shall select three suitable persons as candidates for the Legislative Council and that said com mittee report at a meeting to be hcid on Sat urdav thc23dinst at the Session boom at i o'clock in the evening The following persons were then nomina ted anti annointed to carry into effect the pro ceeding resolution Carpenter David rench John arrar Chauney Hurlbut Alex Garrison John Scott and Garry Spencer It was further Resolved That the citizens of each town in the be requested to appoint committees to meet the committee from Detroit on Saturday the 23d inst at 10 1 clock A AL at the Session Room in De
