leave absence was granted to Mr Raynale during his illness 'Mfr Comstock presented the petition of the heirs of Barnes Henry praying rfor an act to enable the Judge of Probate to' soil certain lands for the bene fit of said heirs and' their legal representatives rertd and referred to a Select Committee of three arid Messrs Comstock Cooper and Davis were ap pointed said Committee Barry from the Committee on enrolment reported as correctly enrolled bills of the following viz An Act to repeal the 9th section of an act to prescribe the tenure of office of Auctioneers and lew the duty upon sales at auction in certainCases Approved April 23d and Act to amend an act entitled an act to incorporate the sTrusteesvof Soring Arbor Approved Much 23d The President announced Messages from the of reported as correctly enrolled the following bill Act appointing Commissioners to lay out and establish certain Slate which bill together with the wo bills this day previously reported by the Committee on enrolled bills were presented to the Governor for his signature The Senate on motion of Mr '31v ed itself into Committee of tho Whole Mr Davis in the Chair on the bill entitled A Bdl for the relief of Martin and after some time spent thereon the Committee rose and through their chairman reported the same back to the Senate without amendment And tiie oiil was then ordered to third reading and on motion of Mr Comstock was then read a third time and passed The Senate on motion of Mr Comstock then resolved itself into Committee of the Whole Mr Moore in the Chair on the bill from the of entitled A Bill to provide for the disposit on sf the University and Primary School Lands and lor other purposes and after some time spent thereon the Committee rose and through their Chairman reported the bill back to the Senate with sundry amendments in which they asked the concurrence of the Senate And the Senate thereupon concurred in the sev era! amendments made in Committee ot the Whole except that to sec T9 The question then being on concurring in the amendment to sec 19 to strike but fifteen hun and insert two was decided in the ijegative by yeas and nays as follows: Yeas purposes and none of those having improvements upon them ar the time of their location'as aforesaid and none of the Primary School lands shall be sold at a less minimum price than eight dollars per Scrgeant at arms was sent for Mr Comstock Mr McKey moved to amend by striking out section 19 of any moneys in the treasury not otherwise and inserting of moneys arising from tiie sales of the shall be ap praised shall be deducted from the1 purchase price Provided Tiie same shall be pur chased by the settier or owner of such im provement but if said parcel of land shall be purchased by a person other than the settler or owner then the amount at which said improvements snail lie appraised' shall be required in cash from the purchaser in addition to the one fourth part to be paid at the Company We have just read the act of the Parliament of Up per Canada altering and aitv nding the charter of the London and Gore Railroad Company the name of which is changed to that which stands at the head of this article Not having space to give the amendments entire to day we shall re strict ourselves to a brief synopsis of the meet important provisions In the first place the capital of the Company is increased from two hundred to five hundred thousand pounds A loan of two hundred thou sand pounds is also made by the Government to the Company Incase the Company do not already possess the same liy their charter to have full power to continue their railroad from the town of London to ort Edward at the foot of lake Huron The Executive of the Province is authorized to se lect a corps of Engineers to survey and lo cate the Great Railroad from the town of London to any part of the Western District at or between Port Amherstburgh (at the mouth of Detroit River) and Port Sarnia or Port Edward at the foot of Lake Huron They are prohibited however from running their road in to the townships of Sandwich or Bertie without the consent of the Niagara and Detroit Rivers Railroad Company The two Companies are authorized to connect intersect or unite their respective roads at such point or place as they may agree upon The Company are prohibited from expending any of the government loan beyond (west of) the town of London until the route which may be surveyed and located by the Company shall be approved by Parliament at its next meeting The eastern termination of the Road is esta lished at Hamilton at the head of Burlington Bay EZThe Advertiser of Tuesday has a charac teristic article assailing Alessrs Norton and McDonell in regard to the expenses of the De cember State Convention The intimations con tained in it are as destitute of truth as the lan guage in which they are couched is disreputable to the character of the newspaper press The ill bred allusion of the article to a Mr is quite worthy of its source If the editor of the Advertiser had consulted with its proprietor he would have learned that Air Nor ton is the gentlemanly and popular Cashier of the Aljchigan State Bank and that he is as far above the unprovoked assaults of a hireling scrib bler as the scurrilous effusions of the latter are beneath the serious notice of honorable men Ohio The Senate of Ohio have passed the great Bank Bill which has long been under dis cussion in that body It incorporates twenty seven new banks and re charters all the exist ing one extending them 12 years One of the most important features of the Bill is that it re quires that every Bank should subscribe one tenth of its capital to some work of Internal Im provement Opening of The Cleveland Daily Advertiser of the 9th inst says There is at present a fair prospect of an early opening of navigation The ice left the river yesterday Should the weather continue favorable for a few days trips from Cleveland to Detroit will soon be QZOur river and harbor have been for sever al days clear of ice In the New York Senate on the 1st inst a bill providing for the repeal of the Usu ry Laws with regard to short commercial pa per was rejected by the strong vote of 17 to 6 The Canal Board of New York have reduced for the year 1837 the lolls on boats used chiefly for the transportation of persons and navigating the Erie Canal between and Uti ca 8 6 cents per The Legislature by a concurrent resolution of both Houses have fixed upon Tuesday next the 21st inst as the day of adjournment Extract of a letter dated Washington Alarch 41837 4 this morning the twenty fourth congress of the United States adjourned The land bill the new harbor bill the bill in creasing the rank and file and staff of the rearu lar army and one or two other important bills were lost in the house of representatives The fortification bill was passed' by the senate and the house annexed to it a section distribu ting among the states the surplus revenue in the treasury on the first of next January and sent the bill back to the senate with that amendment The senate disagreed to the amendment' house insisted upon it the
