postage upon newspapers sent to obliges Postmasters tomake detailed returns of the xeceipts from this source and these returns being consoli dated at afford a very correct basis for ascertaining the circulation of the different journals The Detroit Ree Press is now paying newspaper postage at a rate of 10000 a year Without enlarging upon the obvious circumstance that this postage tax of 310000 a year would be a very hand some income for almost individual and that it is an onerous and uncalled for burthen upon newspaper publishers we have the satisfaction of knowing that according to the most iecently published report The ree Press stands seventh among all the journals published in the United States in respect to combined circulation of daily and weekly papery In other words there are only six newspaper establishments including the New York jess that pay more for postage upontheir combined daily tri weekly and Weekly a circulation than does The ree press 4 In respect to the circulation of weekly papers the postage returns show that but three others exceed The ree Press A considerable portion of the edition of The Weekly ree Press is sold to the wholesale newsdealers It is furnished them at the office of publication and they provide for its distri bution A good share of the papers furnished newsdealers go hence by express and there fore no postage is paid upon them otherwise the official returns instead of designating The ree Press fourth would probably it nearer the head of the list Two circumstances justify the statement that The Weekly ree Press in respect to cir culation really ranks higher than the Postof fice returns make manifest The first is the fact that not being so heavy as some of the papers mentioned as exceeding it more copies are required to make up a pound avoirdupois upon which weight the postage is calculated The second circumstance is the large number of copies of The ree Press which are dis tributed by the newsdealers and do not pass through the mails at all Taking into account these material offsets in our favor and we are quite confident that in respect to combined circulation of all editions The ree Press ranks sixth and in respect to weekly circulation alone it stands third on the list It is a work of no slight magnitude to build up a newspaper to such a position In the newspaper world "more so than in any is confidence a plant of slow growth There is no enterprise in which so much time and persistent labor directed always with an honest and intelligent ore required to achieve success a The publishers of The ree Press are profoundly grateful that their efforts have been so thoroughly appreciated and'the merits of the paper have been so extensively recog nized That its Circulation isnot bounded by the American continent is a sufficient acknowl edgment that an intelligent reading public when thty discover a meritorious journal are not slow to avail themselves of it We may add that the force in our mailing room is six times as large as it was a year ago and the subscrip tions come in at a correspondingly augmented rate The literary standard of the paper and its readable qualities give it a place in the very front rank of the newspapers of the world It shall be our aim to constantly add to its originality and to Lighten its attractiveness in every particular 'INEST CONECTIONERY 'INEST CANNED GOODS i NUTS ALL
