of the first opening of the new audi ence room to th? public the services of the church having hitherto been held in the basement since the erection of the new edifice The concert consisted of vocal and instrumental music by Messrs Whittemore Thomas and Boice of Detroit and vocal music by the church choir All of the parties implicated in the late burglary have been arrested and most of the stolen The strike up to the present time has not become general but as many of the large dealers have heavy con tracts to fill it seems likely that a temporary settlement will be made It is said that Convention at Second Day's Proceedings 'Cincinnati May 2 The American Pub lic Health Association met this morning and appointed Drs Touor Jarvis and Bell a Committee on Publication The Executive Committee was directed to call a special meeting this coming summer and fix the time for the next annual meet ing An invitation from the Mayor of Provi dence Rhode Island to hold the next an nual meeting there was accepted A paper prepared by Dr Elisha Harris of New York on areas of sanitary administra tion and the practical application ot general laws and local ordinances relative to health was read by President Smith The import cf the paper was that health laws were beneficial and their efficiency and value depended upon the intelligence ot committees executing them The only real security against the march ol cholera was the intelligent execution by committees of good health laws Central boards of health were desirable lor dirt'asing intelligence and awakening public interest A resolution was adopted appointing Dra Elisha Harris Dorman Eaton John Ordronneaux and Stephen Smith a commit tee to consider and report the best plan lor the appointment and organization of national State and local boards of health Dr VVm Clendenin ot Cincinnati lead a paper on the general causes of disease He spoke of the difficulties of diagnosis among which are imperfection of pbyso logical science disposition to ig nore trivial causes the effect of which Is to neglect the study of common diseases and to make frantic exertions against violent recurring epidemics which in reality are not so destructive as some other diseases which create no special alarm but operate slowly and steadily The main body ot the paper was devoted to instancing cases in which there was special danger ot ialse diagnosis The special commKtee on quarantine pre sented a report prepared by Henry Harts horne of Philadelphia its President It was to the effect that the only legitimate purpose ot quarantine was the inspection of vessels tor the detection and removal of causes of dis eases they may impart The report was dis cussed and recommitted In the afternoon a communication from Dr Marsden of Quebec
