represented by a Minister who Ignores them altogether or snubs or insults them when he is sunrised to find them in the same society as himself He has so well established this reputation that many ot our best Americans pass through Berlin or live in it for years without even call ing upon him and many avoid it entirely on his account Long since he should have been recalled it only for the gross scandal he cre ated by hia persecution of one of our most respected and wealthy families who had dare! commit the indiscretion cf being pre sented at court by the wife of the English Ambassador They bad repeatedly appealed to Bancroft for this honor and finally ac cepted gratefully from another legation a le gitimate favor their own had denied them At the following court entertainment Ban croft made his disapprobation of their pres ence so apparent as to attract tbe attention of the chamberlains who from rep resentations felt compelled to request these ladies to leave the palace To defend bis own cose he was obliged to make the worst out of theirs He was so very violent in his assertion of their unfit ness to be there that mar present naturally conceived the most prejudicial opinions ot these characters which were entirely as unexceptionable as their manners ap pearance and dress This matter has been frequently discussed by persons who were present on the occasion and never but with one opinion as to the part the American Minister played in it This very disgraceful circumstance Is said to have contributed greatly towards confirming his unpopularity at court where being utterly unnoticed but in the merest official way be is the more asxious that no one else should receive a more gracious recognition there than himself No ether explanation is given ot tLe arrogant tone that both he and John Jay take in per mitting no Americans but themselves to ap proach the imperial precincts PROBABLS CHANGE or 1 OLICK COMMIS SIONERS Nw Yobk May Oliver Charliek ilent Of the day or two ago a young man named red HaaUnga who boarda on Macomb street and who was formerly a corporal in tbe Sixth Michigan Cavalry received a letter from Staunton Virginia from an ex Uon federate soldier which revives an old inci dent painful to the mind of every Michigan cavalryman who was with Sheridan when that General pursued the Confederates after the battle of Gettysburg Th soldier who signs himself William Homer writes that he obtained address from a young lady visiting friends at Staunton and knowing that he was an ex member of the cavalry brigade asks him It he knows anything the family of CapL Royee a Michigan officer who was killed at alling Waters Homer writes that the gold watch and chain taken from Royce is in the hands of a farmer near Staunton and can probably be had by tbe payment of a small sum Hastings has already answered the letter and if the possessor of the watch will part with it the relic will come home and be handed over to the relatives There were at least a hundred eye witnesses to the murder tor it was nothing less Lee had made great haste back to the Potomac and whau troops had naached' alling Wataaily a ford across the river most ofthe attd Ito iflirts had crossed Some five or six thousand Confed erate Infantry were stationed behind rude earthworks hastily constructed to cover the ford and a fight began as soon as the cavalry came In sight An earthwork behind which five or six hundred Confederates were posted loisted a white flag and when two companies of cavalry rode down to receive the surrender they were met by a fire which nearly emptied half the saddles The Michigan brigade with other troops were then dismounted and led into the wood to attack the left flank Every foot of ground was vigorously contested and when the Confederates had been forced back to tbe edge a glade about twenty rods long Dy five wide they held the ground until their dead bodies lay piled up in heaps Portions of the irst Sixth and Seventh Michigan Cavalry were in front of this glade and when tbe Confede rates finally fell back Captain Royce led the Wolverines as they charged across the glade He was strack in the ankle by a ball and be hobbled to a large stone and sat down Tbe men passed on but struck two regiments of Confederate infantry posted along a fence and received such a galling fire that they fell back was had Ing of his men wanted to help him across the glade into tbe woods but he told them to go on and he would take care of himself An advance of the enemy drove the ederate across the glade where they took a new stand and Royce was between two fires Three hundred men were within pistol shot of him when a tall ragged rebel dashed out of the woods revolver in hand and as he reached the Captain he fired three bulletr into his head He had grasped the captain's watch nd chain when he was fair ly riddled with bullets and during the charge ot tbe Confederates eoma of them took the watch from his stitl' lingers Royce was a general favorite with the sol diets of his regiment and brigade and his death made fiends of the men Without leaders or encouragement they charged in a body drove the Confederates pell mell and not a prisoner was taken nor could a wound ed Confederate be found on tbe field which Oyeri Every gray was charge across tbe glade a member of the Sixth who Is now living In Sanilac County was taken prisoner In the hurry and ex citement lie was allowed to retain Ma and that he might not be killed by the bullets of his own companions he was told to get down into the dry bed of a ereek He was there when the next charge came and was left behind After the fight he turned over four different Confederates whom he had shot in the back as they ran past toward the ford Hardly an incident of those dark and bloody days can bo called up without having something bitter in it for one side or the other and it is bovs in blue and shoock hands and agreed to bury the past as they buried the dead heroes oP the hard fought battles Mauy articles captured by Michigan soldiers have been sent ba to their Southern owners and if the relic of a brave officer and a good citizen is returned to those who
