which was composed chiefly of Republi cans gold Democrats ladles and negroes When he entered the court room he was given a grand ovation which lasted fin several minutes No one introduced Mr Wilson When he arose to speak the crowd cheered him loudly In his speech he made a strong appeal for the gold standard and was cheered repeatedly in the course of his remarks One of the fir st things he said in his speech was that he was a Dem ocrat and not a Populist He denounced the Chicago convention and the platform on which Mr Bryan was nominated and said it was nothing on earth but a Populist con vention and a Populist platform and that It was almost an exact copy ot the Pop ulist platform of 1882 He said the convention was run by Till man and Altgeld both of whom were an archists and Populists When he mention ed 5lr name the crowd cheered it loudly An organized gang stood in the rear of the building when Sir Wilson first started to speak and kept yelling for Bryan so much that police had to be kept In the building to keep the crowd quiet Mr Wilson said Air Bryan was an elo quent speaker an able orator an extrem ist and entirely too young a man to be president of the United States He spoke for over two hours and quoted a large number of the authorities Ke said he was not a bolter from the Democratic party and that on the third of November he would vote for six Democratic electors and not for two Populists and four Demo crats as a large number of people in his county were going to do In the course of his speech he paid a hfzh tribute to Mr Carlisle and President account of its flame its noise and its rending force but their limited mechanical skill could sug gest very little use for it Possibly it was used in warfare long be fore the beginning of history but the 'first man in historical times to form an idea of the terrible destruction which this awful bursting fiery substance might produce was an English monk named Roger Bacon Monk in his day were the chemists scholars and writer of the world and this Roger Bacon traveled and studied much and made continual experiments In his labora tory to prove for himself and to develop what he Learned from others He probably saw gunpowder among the Moors in Stain and tried for himself its explosive effecL Then he wrote ot its composition In the year 1267 and in his writing suggested that it could be used in engines of war to dal death and destruction to armies of men soon after Roger Bacon's time his sug gestions were taker up and guns were con structed first bj binding irqj bars together with of the financial Issues now being fought out in the campaign said: "My friends this whole free coinage movement is a mad craze It was con ceived in iniquity and brought into life in a revolutionary outburst at the Demo cratic Populistlc convention at Chicago on the tenth of last July The whole mon strous and unnatural effort if It confers one benefit from Its realization will only confer that benefit upon a certain class of people who will be only too glad to pay their honest debts at cent on the dollar It 1 merely intended to open a wav for the thriftless and dishonest bankrupt by which he may be able to enforce the satis faction of an honest contract for less than is actually due under that contract It was never Intended for the upbuilding of the honor of the nation or the general ever lasting good of the mass of the people hut if it should come to pass us a result of the approaching election it win bring down upon this Yepublic the black stigma of re pudiation and destroy our national credit among the governments of the world Should such a national misfortune come upon us as the election of Bryan you would sec the holders of bonds rushing in upon the national treasury for the redemption ot their securities The supply of gold would rapidly become exhausted and as a nation we would be at once launched upon the unknown sea of free coinage in a rud derless ship and go drifting steadily on tha breaker of broken credit and bank ruptcy The history of the world shows that wars and revolutions have come and governments have been changed in a day but never before this time in the history of our union has there been attempted a scheme looking to the maintenance of our national credit upon a debased and depre ciated currency "I say to you my friends that if this free coinage craze should come to an ab solute realization In the election of Bryan untold thousands of business houses wold close their doors and untold thousand of laboring men would be tramping the high ways of this country looking for the poor pitiful boon of earning their living in the sweat of honest toil What astonishes ma I that there can be found an honest in telligent man in all these states who ha? the temerity to tell the workingman that the free coinage of silver will benefit him but it is still more amazing that there can be found a bread winner with even common sense who will believe Mr Schurz devoted a considerable por tion of his time to describing the economi condition which he said have prevailed for many years in 5Iexlco and urged hia audience to believe that there is not a na tion on earth where the free coinage of sil ver ba prevailed where the wages of labor have not gone down the scale to the star vation point In conclusion he said that during the period Of the war prices of the common necessaries of life advanced 117 per cent while wages went up the scale only 43 per cent It was therefore reasonable to be lieve that if free coinage should come with the approaching election the advance of prices of food product would again be away out of proportion to the advance of wages ollowing the close of the meeting an in formal reception was tendered Mr Schurz
