Shippers from ports at the head of Lake Su perior covered more ore Monday by lake freight contracts The ore which will be moved in May June July and August will ba carried at 55 cents a ton There Is more short season ore on the market at the same figure and own ers were Monday offered blocks to be carried in June and August That would leave the boats free in May to carry grain It better rates being done and the indica tions are lliAt some tonnage will bo lined up during the next few days Everything points to a IC cent rate from Escanaba and vesselinen do not appear to be anxious to tie up for less than cents for the full seasep from Marquette As yet only one shipper has asked for blds on blocks of coal Owing to the large amount of coal tonnage that was taken oft the market dur ing the Monday that an effort would be made to have owners who carry coal to stand for 30 cents on to the head of I rike Superior and 40 cents to Portage and the leading Lake Michigan ports on season contracts It Is ex pected that some chartering will be done before the close of the week Grain carriers are in fair demand at Chicago and Milwaukee and the rate on corn for winter storage and spring delivery is firm at 2 cents The steamer John Owen was chartered for a straight load'at Milwaukee Monday at that fig ure Chicago shippers are taking tonnage pretty freely and if chartering is as active for the next few weeks as it was last week all the boats available will be placed Last week capacity for 1500 tXK) bushels of corn was placed at hi cents to Buffalo Saturday room was taken for 130000 bushels of Corn to Kingston at 44 cents NN i th perhaps a few exceptions vessel agents at Chicago and Milwaukee have reached the con clusion that the Buffalo rate on corn for winter storage and spring delivery will not go above 3 cents A Cleveland vessel owner who has looked over the ground carefully at Chicago is of the same opinion The shippers he says claim that the railroads will all the corn they want to send forward at 3 cents and that If the vcsselmen want the business they will have to keep below that rate The available tonnage is being picked up rapidly and If the market is as active
