paying a lot of attention to the mile track Added to his own observations he has the word oi the trainers who have been using it and the club has decided to carry out his suggestions as to a new top dressing The turns need resurfacing and contracts will be let in a few days The surveys have been made and from six to ten inches of clay will be added to the turns half way out from the pule The home stretch is all right as is most of the back stretch but where needed the right kind of dirt will be supplied so that in the soring the track can be made in excellent shape The track was not good this year the surface having been worn off but at that Dan Newell did a good job of patching It up to mako it fit for the best horses This is the first time since the reconstruc tion of the track bv the present driving club that anything has been done in the wav of adding soil to the surface What with a Rood mill track and a brand new half mil track probablv will be one the greatest training the It is only two years old but a newcomer cun hardly believe this for the fairway is in beautiful shape and our greens are quite as good us the average now and will Improve with use I think that the black surface near the lake would account for this although it Is something that was sadly lack ing on our old course and that was nearer the lake than the present course Although the country round about is nut ugly the general land scape is not one of particular beau ty so in that respect we must ad mit Inferiority to many other courses It is in the playing course itself that the club places its pride and 1 can say along with Ray that it is the best course I have played over in this country I have played many courses in the east and most all the prominent courses in the northwest andr never have I seen one that put up the same test of golf as the course up on Lake St Clair Mr II Colt of England laid out the course and as he is the highest authority on golf course construction the committee made the right kind of a start There were 27t acres of ground to choose from and this fact aided him a lot for it allowed him to make each hole separate from the last so that there was none of this confusing going back and forth over a square lot and having holes run parallel When one is playing one nole he is entirely separate from the rest ot the holes and so is free from that noise and the danger of having a stray ball lay one low Excels in Length of Holes It is in the length of the holes that our course excels I think for only on two boles could the length be Changed to any advantage namely the eleventh and sixteenth or eighth All the holes are of fine caliber especially one two thirteen and seventeen A great deal of stress is laid on the drive and a long accurate driver finds the holes opened up very well but let fcjin fall down the least bit on his driving and he is indeed in quite a difficult position This is especially true on the first third and ninth holes where a short drive or the line gives an approach shot that requires a nicety that few amateurs possess Several changes have Leen sug gested and talked over but the discussion generally gets down to whether or not the eleventh hole should be altered in any way Per sonally I believe that the holes should either be lengthened or shortened for it seem right that one should be forced to play short of a trap or a ditch on a long hole Long holes are for the benefit of the longer player and if he is forced to play short on his second shot he loses his advantage In either case I believe that the bank of the ditch should be levelled and a large trap Inserted to guard the green and then the would be unbeatable The short fifth hole gives a hook ed shot too much advantage and allows luck to enter into the cal culation too much A ditch where one might get a good lie and his opponent a poor one when the snots TRICK PLAYS WILL BE STOCK rromIse8 Center of ootball 1 Interest Thistle Patch Recently Bought by
