today fllbe JBetrott Jfm Wgg NOVEMBER 28 1913 9 UNIVERSITY BOWS TO OHIO NORTHERN DALY GIVES LAST DRILL TO CADETS Buckeyes Score Only Touchdown of Stubborn Battle as Result of Long orward Pass in the Second Army Driven Through Short Quarter of Threatens Oftener Than Visitors But Always alls Short of Score BY HALL A BEAUTIULLY executed Ohio Northern forward pass let cher to Hill proved the play that put the University of Detroit foot ball eleven on the short end ot a 1 to 0 score said pass coming in the second section of one of tne most evenly fought interstate foot ball struggles seen in Detroit this season Though the Red and White ot the local university was trailed in the dirt ot Mack park gridiron It was by no means a disgraced team that left the field a loser for the plays each and every one of them showed the real of 3 lighting spirit throughout and forced the visitors back to the last ditch on three occasions only to lose the oval 'through the breaks of tne game Slippery Ground Hinders I ot It was by reason of the slippery ground flack of the Ohio goal that tne vialturg wore enabled to keep their goal line inviolate vor llaigii heaveu a beautiful for ward naas io AluUane er the posts in the third quarter The tuns was such a long one that Dannv was forced to look lor the 10 yard xune chalk mark before turning around to receive and aa he turned he slipped when about to leap in the air for the pall anu it supped througn his arms no Bcore resulting It was almost too pretty play to go wrong and would have given the of anven break for it was directly back of the crossbar and the goal would have been easy It was a typical holiday football crowd of some 2500 persons that watched the battle and the noise which the cheering sec tion made would have done credit to a band of Mexican rebels The Engineers' clown band also was on hand and scored a big hit by its unmusical but decidedly funny per formance JJetwen halves it pa raded the field and gave an alleged concert in pildfield that was a scream Two more evently matched teams seldom step on a gridiron than the Ohio Northerners and the of ontrary to the advance reports sent out regarding the weight of the visiting players there was lit tle to chuose between them and the locals in avoirdupois and the playing all the way was about as even as the two teams were match ed tn weight letcher Does Spleudhl Work The visitors boasted a quarter back letcher by name who was the main cog of their machine and around whom most of their plays revolved and he wa a centrifugal force which enhanced his team's at tack 6u pur cent This young man who unlike the other members of hla team disdained to wear a head gear was a whole team in him self ills long runs which he made possible by beautiful Judgment in eluding tacklers featured the vis itors' play On one occasion he got awav for a 30 yard dash on a fake kick formation but the play was not held legal because Left End Cobb1 so far forgot himself as to jjtand somewhere on the mark where the of scrimmage line was poised for action rather than back of the ball letcher is rated as the best quar terback in Ohio minor college cir cles and lived up to his name In addition to carrying the ball well through broken held he also started all of his team's forward passes and his direction and distance was good although the of backs either Intercepted or knocked most of them incomplete In the punting department he also was a bit fac tor tn his team's success in addition to letcher Etherton yke and Captain Stumpf did good execution on line plunges It was on off tackle smashes runs and two successful forward passes that the visitors gained their groundage Linemen Have lue Battle Their line was held by the of forwards on defense but the De troit Jinemen did not aeoni to be able to open up holes for Captain Haigh and his henchmen to gain through with any degree of regu larity the locals relying much on the same methods of play as the visitors to gan ground MuHane Captain Halgh and Hum ler were the real heroes of the Vf combination although Hard ing Dolan and Willett did good ex ecution Mullane was a tower of strength both on offense and de fense He took two forward passes for gains one of which netted 42 yards on another occasion grabbed one of heaves and car ried it 39 yards and made several nice gains on end around plays Halgh started all of the IT of I) passes and did the punting for his team besides being a big factor in stopping the visiting team's attack He also ripped off good yardage on off tackle plunges on several oc casions Willett who was substi tuted for Harbrecht when hurt his knee did things After making several good tackles he rip ped off 11 yards on an off tackle plunge Ills Arm Dtalorated Rumler never pul up a better game than he did in this struggle Getting in the game only a few days atter an attack of tonsiliUs he got into every play until in the third quarter he was forced to re tire with a dislocated elbow Quarterback Dolan the midget of all the players tn the game made his presence felt by making several nice gains doing some good tack ling and blocking and used good judgment in directing his team's play Harding was especially strong on defense as was Deckard and both did some particularly good blocking Something might be said compli mentary about every man on the of squad but space will not permit so suffice it tu say that theeam as a unit played a splendid game and despite its defeat each and every player in the ensemble did something worth while Mullane Intercepts Pass Alter the initial kickoff Ohio rushed the ball from their uwn 32 yard line to the of 35 yard stripe through plunges by the bucks and a 23 yurd sprint by letcher Mullane then grab bed an Ohio forw ard pass and raced to the visitors' 26 yard line here he was forced out of bounds by Captain Stumpf Three assaults at the visitors line and an incomplete forward pass went wrong Then Deckard dropped puck for a place kick which was blocked Dolan getting Etherton who scooped up the ball on the of 32 yard line running him down from be hind letcher ripped off 12 yards on a kick formation around left end and the ot held the visitors for three downs when a place kick was tried but boot was a yard wide of the uprights A series of line plunges and end runs gave the of a tiird juncture Yohe made a bad pass over Halgh's head and Boesgner recovered tlvo ball on the 35 yard line A series of assaults at the Detroit line carried the ball to the Detroit SS yard mark and letcher passed to Hill who had hidden himself along the sidelines unnoticed and he raced across the goal line for the only store of the game Detroit received the kick off and af ter the ball bad been carried to the 46 yard line yke intercepted a of forward pass and Dolan reciprocated wiien the Buckeyes tried one and Wil lett shot nit tackle for 11 yards as the half ended Runtlcr Recovers umbled Bunt The Palates correctly and either grabbed them or batted them down In fact the Ithacans have done better work on defense if they had known their enemy's whole code of signals trick plays which were absurdly simple and poorly execut ed also fared badly usually result ing In a joss A double pass and fake forward pass were about the extent of the repertoire of de ctptlon and they have de rived a day old kitten Penn "ould have been even less aue CHssful in the matter of runningth the ball except for Cornell's tendency to miss tackles at times Almost invariably the linemen were through in time tn spoil the plays but they sometimes let the runner Jlude them when they ought to hve nailed him for a loss In the field the tackling was very however and the secondary Mfense sized up a play quicker jno got Bit0 jt harder than any 'he writer has seen this year bar ing Michigan Cornell Starts Iludly The game started as though to a repetition of history Cornellceived the kick off and on the first rush fumbled on her 26 JDn line where a Penn man grab the ball The Quaker rootingtil0 flrst went into an orgy of Jnnusiasm and then sat back re to try not to look bored Cornell's slip instead of de Lahr and Coli the hall ate up the Mtory dike a prairla jlre 'cats up passing and Cornell grabbed the leather on her own 35 yard line A 15 yard penalty lor holding set the Ithacans back Id yards Just as the period was about over and they had tv Punt enn had the ball in midfield when the final quarter began A forward pass of 3u yards from Minds to Kelly put the Quakers on speak ing terms with goal line and another forward pass which Marshall had squarely In his hands and dropped would have meant a touchdown if Dick had been a little more skillful Un the fourth down Penn tried another pass which went over the goal line and counted as a touchdown Pennsy blocked a kick on the fourth flown immediately after thia and took the ball once more oir Cornell's 2u yard line Again came the forward passes one of which resulted in a touch back Barrett who had been recuperating on the sidelines went bacK into the game: here and put the ball clear down to enn's 20 yard line with a long punt had to kick back and Barrett was downed on his own 35 1 yard line There Cornell began the I promenade which resulted in her third touchdown an 18 yard sprint by ritz covering the final stripes ritz was far and away the hero uf this history making game lay ing end on defense and halfback on offense he smashed plays whenever they came near him and gained miles of ground for the Red and White He scored all three of the touchdowns saved Cornell one point by a remarkable catch of a punt out got the field on kicks in wonderful style and broke up half a dozen forward passes for the Quakers He made several runs of more than 10 yards and hacked his way through the line better than any other back Cornell used inthe oring chance I enn went dry grass Every place on lino seemed porous and half the time the Cornel runner got as far as the secondary defense on hla feet second touchdown came Just at the close of the first period One of long kicks which Pehn let roll to her 10 yard line and a penalty for holding assessed against the lied and Blue forced Minds to kick from behind his own goal line Barrett brought the ball back to the 35 yard line and then Cornell began a line assault which took the flgrhtlnK to Penn's four vanl stripe With four yards to go on the last down Cornell elected to try drop kick The ball went low and Penn partially blocked it in ally the spherlod with the wholn troupe fighting for It rolled over the goal line where rits snuggled up to It for a touchdown This vlr ually put the game In a safe spot for the Ithacans and the fact that Penn came back gamely and out played them for a time did not cause any particular apprehension Penn Has Iletter In Second Penn had the better of the sec ond period twlco workng the ball into Cornell's territory Once It was lost un a forward pass whoh Cor nell Intercepted on her IS yard line and another time the Red and White grabbed a heave on her own 20 yard stripe A great punt by Minds which caught Cornell by sur prise and rolled clear oher one yard line covering a distance of 73 yards put the New Yorker's on the defensive In this quarter There was no more action ot any moment until about the middle ot the third period when Capt Young of Penn broke through Cornell's right wing and covered 36 yards be fore he was brought to earth It was the longest run ot the game and for a moment It seemed certain that Young would get clear andcore a touchdown As the ball had been well within Pennsy territory the result of a wretched fumble of one of Barrett's kicks the run got Penn nothing but some excitement Cornell inert Vred with a Quaker who was about to receive a forward pass and the hall went to the Red and Blue for a first down on the enemy's 25 yard line de fense braced again at this point and Marshall tried an onside kick which Barrett caught right on the goal line end ran out to the 10 yard stripe He immediately punted out of danger and Penn had lost a fine scoring cnance game Williams at center and rick at righ guard for Cornell played wonderful football They hurled back Penn's line assaults until the Quakers got tired of trying to gain through the center ot the fighting front and opened holes for their own hacks In a very capable man ner Barrett's kicking and handling of kicks left nothing to be desired and he also helped out on defense Collyer and Bahr usually were good for gains whenever called on Neither showed ritz's brilliancy in advancing the ball but both played very strongly on the defensive and were particularly active In shaearlng forward passes Ise Mauy Subs Both teams used many substitutes Penn in hopes of stemming the tide Cornell so that a lot of boys who have worked hard all fall might get their letters At the close of the fray there was only one regular in the Ithacan line up Captain Munns Sticking to the finish and playing Splendidly throughout Cornell students who witnessed the game there seemed to be mil lions of them made up for 12 lean years by their celebration after the battle Over 3000 tell in behind the band and snake danced around the field throwing their hats over the goal posts and all but uprooting the uprights latar they marched down town singing and yelling By the time the procession had reached Broad street which Is Philadelphia's Woodward avenue reinforcements In the form of all the hoodlums not otherwise engaged had tacked on and were cheering as lustily for Cornell as though they knew where it was located At the present moment the Itha can delegation Is giving cheers for everybody In the United States and meanwhile devoutly team that rings in last year's tan shoeA equipped with cleats in its big gafne is an underslruble aggre gation which has something in for the sporting goods vendors The condition of the field forced both coaches to put chains un theh plunging backfields to keep them from skidding There was something else the matter with the Soo team in addition to this however A few Clarks and Browns would have
