in which the business of the session just closed has been con ducted They say that time was taken up in useless discussions and that the bust ness before the council could have been completed in two days instead of five One of the new members of the council was surprised at th'e way the business is conducted but when he made a remark to this effect he was told that the council always counted on a session lasting a week no matter how much business was before them 'He could not understand why the council took so many adjournments in the week but was informed that the commit tee work had to be done and the council could not continue in session unless the members were all present Then he sug gested that the members of the commit tees put in a little overtime in the even ing out learned that there never was a precedent established for night work In fact the council had never provided any way of lighting the council chamber in anticipation of night work There is a fine loOKing enunueuer document and the re mainder of the session was given over to the consideration of the report of the finance committee A document was presented to the coun cil purporting to be a sworn statement ot the late ex treasurer William Wright tn MISS ESTHER ST JOHN artistic standpoint that has yet been ex perienced by that organization Detroit has every reason to take an 'in terest in the work and the progress of the Detroit symphony orchestra It is a credit to any city to have identified with it an orchestra which shalf honestly win A good name for Itself by hard work and faithful attention the demands of the music played by it It is this very thing that the present Detroit orchestra is endeavoring to do With confidence in its young director and a better feeling among the musicians themselves' than' has existed for several years the outlook is bright' A fault that hag thus far been apparent in the symphony programmes has'rJeen their JAn audience except" in rare cases does hot care to he'ar a concert pro gramme of over two hours including en cores riday's concert was too long something should hatfe been omitted from the programme preferably the or one or two movements of the Symphony Another criticism to be made is the lack of promptness with which the concert be gan It should be understood that a con cert is tb begin at a stated time and then that time should be rigidly adhered to People should be prevented from going to their seats between movements of a divided composition and steps should' be taken to prevent the audience at the back part of the armory from moving about All these things are hard on the director and the orchestra alike and better results would be obtained if these objectionable features could be eliminated May festival arrangements have been largely completed by Prof Albert Stanley and the cast of solcists as he has an nounced them is an attractive one The soprano will be Marie Knubal Zimmerman and Mme Schuman Heink' has been re en gaged to contralto solos With her will be Miss Roselle ielding Evan Will iams and Glenn Hall will sing tenor and Gwyllym Miles and A Howland will sing bass Campanart will again be on the programme
