from the assess ment roll for the reason that it was located In Hamtramck The mandamus was denied the court holding that a company could not set up its hailing port in Hamtramck be cause it bolds its annual meeting there when Ute actual business of the company was transacted in the office in the city The hailing port of a company the court held is in the place where the business office is located and where its principal business is done 1 The Crescent Transportation Co was as sessed $1862 to by the city two years ago and at the same time it was assessed one fourth or one third of that amount by the village of Highland ark in which it claimed residence The company filed a bill in the Wayne Circuit Court asking for an injunction to restrain the receiver of taxes and the city of Detroit from collecting the tax levied on its property A preliminary Injunction was granted but on the hearing of the molten to dissolve the same the court ordered the dissolution of the temporary Injunction Matilda Schuchard filed a petition in the Wayne Circuit Court yesterday for leave to appeal from the order of the Probate Court of November 28 1833 admitting the will of her father the late Ernest Nup penau to probate She states that only within a few days she discovered that she had been cut oft entirely in the will from participating In the tlWOOO estate left by her father learning this just in time to make this application before the time for doing so had expired which would be in about ten days Ernest Nuj penau supervisor of the board i of education died on October 2S 1833 leav ing a widow AMitelmtna yuppenau a daughter of the same name now 41 years old: the petitioner who is 33 years old and a son August Nuppenau 31 years of ace Mrs Schuchard says that she made an unfortunate marriage and that she has three small children and no means of sup port While her father lived he paid the rent of herdiouse on Mallett street and gave her money but always warned her not to tell her mother because then he would get Into trouble and could assist her no lonjrer She says tliat for six months previous to the death of her father she was not allowed to see him whle her mother sister and brother lived with him in his $IOOuJ homestead on Ledyard from this property She says the es tate owns twelve dwelling houses on Sec ond avenue and Pitcher street from which an income of $480 per month is deri ed yir Schuchard says that all she received in charitv from her mother during the nest year is £W9 She had always thought that under the provisions of the will she would be amply provided for during her mother's life and that after her leah se would receive her share of the estae tn lv within a few days she learned irat she was cut off without a cent in the will and St the entire estate was in her mother that certain matters were held over her fahcr which influenced him CanT eV TrdTr vilhelmina AAiirriv I'bOTC CAMS CA 26 why a'n appeal should not Pulp and paper trade circles of both Can ada and the United States are just now watching come of precedent to come set upon this country and the matter is now in the hands of the board of appraisers of New York city Some time ago the Laurentide Pulp Company of Montreal had a car oad of pulp seized by the collector of cus toms of this port on a charge of underval uation The Lauren tide people had entered the pulp at $12 lector assessed pounds The was tneir net American side pany means the money received per ton on the cars at their mill deducting from the selling price all costs of delivery viz: freight duty consular and entry fees and manifests The company then refused to abide by the decision of the collector and appealed the matter to tne board of ap praisers of New York city in tile mean while payine the $15 a long ton under pro test un November 3 the collector again seized a carload of pulp of the Laurentide Company on the ground that the valuation was SA1' enoughs He had raised it 12 1 2 per cent on the $15 valuation and claimed a penal dwtv The Laurentide people asked the collector to reconsider but in lieu of the increased duty they will also fight this valuation and carry this instance to the board of appraisers A hearing was to have been had on November by tne board but no decision has been reached The Lauren tide Company is composed mostly of Amer icans with American capital They have submitted some important testimony Ex Senator Warner Miller is ssid to have tes tified that he could buy all the pulp he wanted in this country at 512 a ton and several prominent paper manufacturers and pulp manufacturers have given similar testimony as to the valuation of Carau an pulp The decision of the board of apprais ers is awaited with great interest It will establish a uniform valuation on Canadian wood pulp for the whole frontier Tne effect upon Canada will lie mark in ether direction If the valuation 13 fixed at fit dr will have a tendency ta stimulate tne pulp trade with the United Ate How eve on tbo ri ind a high vaiuj tian is fixed it will be productive of push ing forward the movement to have the dominion government impose an export of $2 50 to 53 per A5J St tklJ HUE LIC umpaae duty of fifteen cems per cord on ai pulp wood exported Te reg ons of the United States and Canada in regard to the wood pulp and wood quesopn kre becoming quite delicate Hence tn decision of the Laurentide Company has peculiar weight under these conations INDORSE MRS WOODHAMS rin The matter of sheriff's fee is still attract ing a great deal of attention in the city ball and the cost of feeding prisoners at the jail is not the only thing likely to receive atten tion from the auditors The more the mat ter is investigated the more it seems evi dent that the position of sheriff of NV ayne county is worth far more than has been reckoned When the modest Sheriff Collins has been asked how much his office is worth he has said he would be satisfied if he could take out of his office as much as the county treasurer in clear gain somewhere between ye otft and But there are those who assert that from the receipts for the board of prisoners alone the she profits ought to amount to the latter figure Prisoners in no other institution of deten tion in the state seem to cost the public as much as they do in the Wayne county jail The board of prisoners at Jackson costs nine and one third cents per day and it is said that prisoners in the state prison are well fed At the Marquette prison the cost of meals per prisoner for each day is eleven and a half cents ayne count' pays the Detroit house of correclon twenuj five cents for prisoners sent there and Supt Nicholson makes money for the city at that laZH 'Mini it rg AcierfcW Lre Nnrih Gerersn lAgyffi
