The Detroit Steel Corp and ithe United Steel Workers (CIO) reached a contract agreement Thursday, ending their part in the nationwide steel strike.

It was the first settlement re-i ported since the nationwide walkout of the steel workers Monday after the Supreme Court declared Government seizure of the steel mills unconstitutional. A DETROIT STEEL spokesman confirmed the settlement. Details of the new contract were unavailable immediately, but Tom Shane, USW District 29 director, said the agreement embodied Wage Stabilization Board recommenda- i tions. These were for a wage increase averaging 12 'i cents an hour, other benefits of 5 to 6 cents an hour, and more in-: creases later on, making the total package 26 to 30 cents by January, 1953. Shane said the company's 4,500 employes were to return to work Friday.

He said about 450 are employed in the firm's three Detroit plants, which include Reliance Steel Div. and Craine Schrage Steel Div. Negotiations between the union and the company took place in Pittsburgh. It could not be determined at whether the contract would serve as a basis for nationwide settlement. The USW contract with "Big Steel" usually sets the pattern.

Senator Byrd (D.t Va.) had proposed to write into an extension of the Defense Production Act a recommendation to President Truman to invoke emergency sections of the Taft-Hartley Act, which permit 80-day no-strike injunctions in such strikes. The bill seeks to extend the Government's powers to control such things as wages, prices, rents and materials. Byrd said the strike imperils the nation's safety and the President should use the tools at hand to cope with it.

McFarland won a delay of action on the Byrd proposal until Monday by a vote of 42 to 38. He implied that the union might stalk out of the White House talks if there was a move to bring the Taft-Hartley Act into the picture. i I Open i Evenings t. WO 4-75S6 ft ij.1.'" McFARLAND touched off a bitter debate when he sought to forestall an immediate vote on the Byrd amendment by sending the whole bill back to the Banking Committee. McFarland, his face flushed in anger, said of Byrd: "I'm sure that politics doesn't figure in what he says and does hera" BEFORE THE postponement the Senate slapped down a series of Republican-led moves to suspend or curb Federal controls over the nation's economy.

Steelman said there had been no discussion of steel price boosts which the Government might approve for the industry to offset, at least in part, any wage concessions to the union.
