DETROIT FREE PRESS Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1951 Taft Wooes South in Fast Moving Tour BY EDWIN A. LAHEY Of Out Washington Bnteai BILOXI, Miss. Senator Taft, of Ohio, wooed the disintegrating "Solid South" ardently in his third, last; and most hopeful campaign for the Republican nomination for President. The breathlessness of this mad affair was as much due to the tight schedule as to the ardor of the suitor.

Total civilian employment in the week ended Oct. 13 was estimated at 61,836,000, little changed from the corresponding period in September.

The October estimate, however, was about one million higher than a year ago. ACT AT GiSCE! after a flight from Birmingham, Taft; gave an address before a farm bu- reau meeting at BiloxL Here he disDlaved his fine mas- tery of the conditional clause. DECLARING in effect that ag- riculture should have some price; support, but not enough to make it habit forming, Tali toia me farmers: "In this complicated modern life, freedom perhaps must be modified somewhat; but if we nil th. sence of freedom must be maintained." Taft stepped with his accustomed aplomb into the pervasive question of race relations. He said at a press conference that he favored Federal legislation for a Fair Employment Practice Commission. The group would study and make recommendations in the field of economic discrimination, but would have no power to coerce employers.

TAFT'S PRINCIPLE of "voluntarism" in this field has been indorsed by some southern editors as "satisfactory." Taft left Biloxi for New Orleans where he faced another crowded schedule Wednesday. Taft told the farm bureau that industry had an advantage over agriculture in its media for selling. "The magazine pages are filled with pictures of beautiful automobiles, and a lot of people buy more expensive automobiles than they need when they ought to be spending the difference in seeing that their family gets better food," he said. Oil Company Official Found Dead in Hotel Frank Roy Clemens, 47, vice president and secretary of the Theisen-Clemens Oil was found dead in his bed in the Detroit Leland Hotel. He had registered under the name of Clem Theisen, police said.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine whether Clemens died of a heart attack. DETECTIVE SGT. Edward Joc-que of the homicide squad said evidence had been found which indicated Clemens recently had made a $10,000 cash settlement with his wife. Only $5 was found in Clemens' pockets, Jocque said. The Theisen-Clemens firm is one of the largest independent STB 1 1 U1UC1C3B gasoline distributing companies in Michigan.
