THE DETROIT FREE PRESS- VEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1940 21 Seven A's Still Are Holdouts Connie Mack Facing Salary Troubles PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 6-(A. )-With less than two weeks before starting west for spring training, Connie Mack's Athletics still have seven holdouts, and the prospect Some of a observers few will salary say troubles. total of the $45,000 bonus Mack anal' Agent Benny McCoy the second baseman's two-year contract calling for $10,000 annually. That heavy money, it's said, may be making some of the other A's think perhaps they, too, are worth more.

To date the A's have signed 23 players. Still unsigned are Pitchers George Caster, Elon Lynn Nelson, Heusser and Hogsett; Infielders Joe Gantenbein and Dick Siebert, and Catcher Frankie and Hayes, 1939 reguJars, are counted upon by the leader of seventy, as keymen in a drive toward another pennant. "I don't have to apologize to anybody," declared Connie, "as the salaries paid by the Athletics through the years have been as good as the standards of the socalled rich clubs." M.S.C.Cagers Plan Flight to Marquette Tilt EAST LANSING, Feb. 6- A Michigan State College team will take to the air again for the first time in nine years when the Spartans fly to Milwaukee Feb. 24 for their basketball game with Marquette.

State also flew to a Marquette cage game in 1931. Coach Ben Van Alstyne announced this afternoon that approval had been made for the trip by college authorities, and that the final decision on the plan awaits only the consent of the players' parents. An additional hitch that looms in the plan is the possibility that the team may fly to the game without either Coach Van Alstyne or Assistant Al Kircher. When the 1931 was made, Coach, Van Alstyne and Kircher, then a senior, both were casualties from air sickness. Both are still considering rail or auto alternative.

Ward Continued from First Sport Page fighter. So he is getting ready for the big test. In fact, he was training in Florida when Hettche discovered that he had left Michigan. Morgan figures to beat Goldberg. Morgan is getting along in years, it is true, and he may stop all at once.

But he looked good in his last start, and there is no reason to suppose that he has slipped since then. After all, he gets more exercise jitterbugging than most fighters get at roadwork. But Morgan can't afford to rate Goldberg too, cheaply. Bad Benny is a fast dangerous puncher. Besides, he is a left hander like Morgan, and the K.O.

has not been called upon to meet many fighters who throw their best punches from the wrong side. It is just possible that Goldberg's strange style will be just what is necessary to turn the fight in his favor. There is apt to be no little betting on the fight, for Benny is, the pride of Twelfth and the fans in that area usually back their opinions with dough. Morgan also his following, and it seems to be equally willing to stand by its predictions. Whatever the outcome the bout should be a good one and should settle a lot of arguments that have been raging for a year or more.

That's what the lads have dug up for the faithful. Wednesday at Hialeah monicker of the hide is Canfield, and reports from one of the track men show a work of three-eighths in a shade slower than :33 Now, gents, that's really stepping on the gas. The track record here is :33, and that makes the work only threefifths of a second off that. L. B.

Mayer owns the maverick, and Steve Judge is the trainer. This makes for a winning combination. In the second race, Wise Decision looks to be in a particularly soft spot, and it won't surprise bit if he should walk away with the heat. Smart players are coupling the pair in the "double" pool in the hope that the refund will be generous. Yes or No (fourth) also promises to be well worth careful attention, and although this bangtail hasn't faced the barrier in four months, the Greentree people have a habit of sending out fit horses.

Most recent work was three-quarters in 1:13 Wise Barrister in the next (fifth) probably rates as best of the day, and overnight, it looks as if you may get an easy 5-2 against his chances. The Mardi Gras is over at New Orleans, and fields are back to normal. However, despite mediocre talent, we think there are several which are well placed, and just about due to roll home. The old faithful, Brandon Prince, which apparently has returned to his winning ways is the first of these -in the opener. With any sort of racing luck he should walk home for his second straight.

The third probably will go to Paganism, while My Lawyer seems to have things all his way in the sixth. Breeks-and, with a name like that, he should get 'em. The race is the third at Santa Anita, and although there are such as Alviso and Commendable to fear, Breeks seems to be ready to take their kind into without a great deal of Last time out, he faced the barrier for the first time in months, running a creditable race. It would seem reasonable to expect considerable improvement. Wedding Call in the fourth is another the lads point out as worth careful attention.

Beat really classy ones last time, and likely to favor the added distancegoes a mile and an eighth, you know. The sixth event would seem be at the mercy of the Milkyway entry of Tough Hombre and Gallahadion, especially if the former goes to the post. MOST PROBABLE, WINNER-Wise Bar. rister. Prince.
