General Commodity Price Rise Maintains for 6 Months Fluctuations Marked Within Sections; General Rise Irregular NEW YORK, July 14-(A. On the trend of commodity prices in the last six months rested the hopes of millions. Price swings often meant the capture or loss of livelihood for farmers, manufacturers and workers- -and were a cause of worry for government officials. The general trend of all commodity prices in the last 18 months has been upward, with the higher level being maintained in the past six months.

At the time of Mr. Roosevelt's inauguration the wholesale commodity price index of the Department of Labor for 784 commodities stood at 60.2 per cent of the 1926 average, and from that March average to May of this year the index rose 13.5 points to 73.7. The interest, however, has not been entirely with the all-inclusive index because it does not measure fluctuations of price sections. The index of non-agricultural prices stood at 63.8 in March, 1933; at 75 in January, 1934, and at 76.6 In May, 1934. For those same periods farm products were 42.8, 58.7 and 59.6, respectively.

Bradstreet's commodity price index stood at 8.83 in January and 9.14 in June. The low point of that index, 6.35, also occurred in March, 1933. But the cost of living has not advanced so sharply as commodity prices at wholesale. This is because the cost of living contains many charges which are comparatively fixed.

The Standard Statistics Co. In an index of all cost-of-living items shows the index stood 78.4 in April as against 77.5 in January and the low point of 71.5 in April of last year. Those figures are based on 1923 as 100. Measured by the National Industrial Conference Board, the cost of living for the wage earner declined 0.1 per cent in April, and at that point was 9.7 per cent above a year ago but 20.9 per cent under April of 1929. The Irving Fisher commodity price index, which uses 1926 as 100, on June 16 reported the highest average of the year at 77.4.
