From the bidding and also from South's refusal to trump the second lead of Diamonds, East reads South with but four trumps, and therefore West, his partner, also with four. In this situation, his best continuance is another Diamond, as there is no way to prevent South from making the Queen of Diamonds, now established, with the Ace of Spades entry in Dummy.

To this lead, South discards the Club Three and wins with the Queen in Dummy. He next leads the Jack of Clubs, wins with the Ace, and returns a small Club, trumping with the Three of Hearts in Dummy. He then leads the Five of Hearts, wins with the Queen, and leads another Club, trumping with the Seven of Hearts. Next he leads the Eight of Hearts, wins with the King and follows with the Ace. This leaves West with one trump, which he can take In at any time by trumping a Club, South making his four-odd.
