Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit. Dr. William K. Howard, 68, a pediatrician, died of respiratory failure Tuesday at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms. Dr.

Howard moved to Grosse Pointe in 1961 and joined the Community Health Organization as a staff pediatrician. In 1973, he was appointed chief of pediatrics at Metropolitan Hospital, a post he held until his semiretire-ment in 1991. Dr. Howard attended Tennessee Military Institute and graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, in 1948. He was a captain in the Army Medical Corps in 1950-51 and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Dr. Howard was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, Michigan Medical Society and the Indian Village Tennis Club. Survivors include his wife, Jane Youmans Howard; daughter, Lynne; sons Bill and John; a sister; a brother, and five granddaughters. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Grosse Pointe "He made no compromise," said Dr.

Charles Wright, founder of the Museum of African-Anierican History in Detroit and a longtime sponsor of Foster's art. "He gave a Negroid appearance to a lot of his paintings and they disturbed some black people, but it didn't bother him. He was never free from controversy." Mr. Foster died of kidney failure Tuesday at Grace Hospital in Detroit. He was 67.

Wright helped plan murals such as "The Life Times of Frederick Douglass," a 10-by-12-foot mural at the Detroit Public Library's Frederick Douglass Branch. In 1978, he commemorated Paul Robeson's 80th birthday in a series of paintings reflecting Robeson in roles of football player, singer and civil rights activist. One of those hangs in the Northwest Activities Center. One generated controversy when Foster offered it, unsolicited, to the Detroit Institute of Arts, which declined to display it. His 1979 mural "Renaissance City" at Cass Tech was damaged by vandals in 1985, but was lovingly restored by Foster and unveiled a second time in 1986.

"He was considered the dean of black artists in Detroit he influenced most of the people who came after him," said Wright. He had been unable to work for several years as his health failed and he gradually went blind, said his brother Fred Foster. "That was especially crushing because he lived for the beauty that he was able to see and to put on canvas," said his brother.
