Volleyball's a valve in a steam engine in pur society." PRO TLAMS and league teams play a better caliber of ball than amateurs out for the exercise. And the difference is easy to spot. Clad in gym shorts, t-shirls and Adidas gym shoes, two six-man teams at the Birmingham YMCA, 400 E. gleefully thwack a white ball between them then slap it over the net to the other team three nights a week. It fs a hit and miss game after a half-hour calisthenics session.

Pot-bellied players jog around the gym waiting their turn to rotate into' the game. Two hours later, a different breed of player arrives on the court. Clad in sweat pants and jackets, they practice rib-cracking dives to the floor and back rolls. Volleyballs spring soundlessly from player's fingertips, pants, said Dr. Marvin Gans, director of physical education and athletics at the college.

PART OF the appeal of volleyball is the cost of the equipment which is minimal (a volleyball costs about $10 and a net $2). A game can be set up almost anywhere and any number of people can play. "My uncle and father both died of heart attacks," said Bob DuPree a Chrysler engineer from West Bloomfield who plays volleyball two nights a week at the Birmingham YMCA. "I feel a lot better now. I hate coming worse than anything.

But once I get here I have fun. A lot of the little aches and pains are gone," he said. No one was able to say with any certainty how far or how tast the volleyball fever is spreading. But Dr. Murray Koorhan, a Southfield dentist who has played volleyball for 35 years, claims that Wilt Chamberlain, coach of the San Diego Conquistadors basketball team wants to organize a professional league.

Monday night football could be replaced by volleyball; but not quite yet. jt t- 4 at W. F. Hackett Son Funeral Home. Dearborn Chapel, 2640 Monroe near W.

BY JAXE BRIGGS Free Press Staff Writer The is much bigger, the net's a little higher and Bobby Riggs docs not play. Still volleyball seems destined to become 'the kicky new sport of the net set. That's what Mick Haley predicts.

Haley is chairman of the State of. Michigan Volleyball Developmental Branch of the Volteyball USVA) and so could be considered a less than objective prognosttcator. His job is to promote the sport at the high school, college and adult level with an eye toward a gold medal in the 1980 Olympic Games. In 1972, the U.S. team never, got to Munich.

It was eliminated i pre-Olympic competition. However, TV viewers did watch the leaps, dives, rolls and spikes of the Japanese women's team that almost snatched the gold medal from the Russian women in the, most recent games, and liked what they saw, claims Haley. And now more than 50 million Americans play volleyball, according to a 1972 survey by the Athletic Institute of Chicago, released by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Americans play volleyball oti beaches, in gyms, at playgrounds a in backyards, They play for fun, for exercise and to win.

PAM IRV1N of Troy likes the game. She plays Monday nights at the Birmingham YMCA. "I used to play it in high school. It was a team thing, you know." Another volleyball enthusiast, Margaret DeMuynckfrom Chesterfield Township has sidelined temporarily during her pregnancy. "I like volleyball because everybody can play it.

It's not like basketball where you just stand around." LANGE back and forth, back and forth. Players hit sinking balls to players who dive to the ground to send them back. This is a league game. When the "power" players start their game, the difference between the fun game and the sport becomes obvious. The power team plays by the rules (and there are 43 pages of them in the official USVA manual), the pace is faster and the ball is hit much harder and with more accuracy.

"They're having a said a 'spokesman for the Costa Lines, the ship's owners.

"I'd love to be on 'board with them instead of sitting In this office." The plush liner was returning from a seven-day cruise to San Juan, St. Thomas and Nassau when it hit a sandbar in heavy early-morning fog Saturday, 2'2 miles north of its Port Everglades destination. It has 'been stuck there since. 'Commercial tugboats worked unsuccessfully throughout the-weekend to free the vessel. Crewmen unloaded about 1,000 gallons of fuel lale Sunday afternoon before tugs made another try at high tide.

Passengers did not seem to mind the delay. Efforts to reach Capt. Maffco Zonka, master of the ship, were unsuc cessful. No one would answer the ship-to-shore telephone. The ship's three bands entertained around the clock and passengers had all the food and drink they wanted, courtesy of the ship's owpers.

The staterooms were filled with tropical flowers ancTplanls. "No one wanted to get off," said the spokesman. Ashore, another 5D0 passengers who were scheduled to board the Fedcrico C. for another seven-day cruise were not upset at the delay either. The company put most of them up in hotels at Miami Beach.

Also, he said, Nixon will be helped by letting a Senate-House committee decide whether he paid the proper amount of taxes. The vice-president made the comments in his finst radio-television panel interview since being sworn in, appearing on ABC's Issues and Answers. THE WHITE House said Nixon sent a private letter to the congressional committee during the weekend asking it to undertake the independent review.

The panel's chairman, Rep. Wilbur D. Mills, had agreed to do so when Nixon telephoned him last Thursday. Mills' said he did not know how the committee would pro-' ceed, but indications were that the issues raised by Nixon would be turned over to its staff of tax experts for study. The committee is composed of five senior members ot the House Ways and Means Committee and an equal number of Senate Finance Committee members.

Democrats hold a majority, but most are considered to be conservatives. While the panel has statutory authority to examine individual tax returns, it has no specific authority to order payment of additional taxe's. Nixon's lawyers acknowledged this lack of authority, but said Nixon would voluntarily file amended returns if the committee rules against him. THE PRESIDENT, meanwhile, faces another potential tax challenge. Sen.
