Having completed the i-tisn't-my-fault-I-took-him-to-ballgames routine, he dashes out to a bookstore. He requests a male clerk. CHARACTERIZED, in his own scripted words, as the kind of fellow who, at 50, is happy with clean underwear, a color TV, and a dish of stewed prunes, the father is, clearly, set up as the person with whom the audience for "Norman Is That You?" is meant to identify.

Fine. JUST FINE, IF one happens to be a moron who likes clean underwear, color TV and stewed prunes. George Schlatter, who made his mark with TV's "Laugh-In" series, gets credit as producer, director and co-screenwriter. Under his guidance, the material gets precisely the kind of sleazy production it deserves, even to shooting the thing on videotape and then transfering it to film, a process that makes one feel as if one were watching the movie on a television set badly in need of repair.
