Ex-Lion Ace Gutousky Dies at 66 back, was with the Lions eight-year career. Gutowsky, a 193-pound full- HAPPY through the '38 season, finishing his career with the old Brooklyn Dodgers in 1939.

Gutowsky, who was born in Russia, entered a hospital last month for minor surgery. He developed internal bleeding and it was discovered he was terminally ill. Leroy (Ace) Gutowsky, who came out of the Oklahoma oil fields to star with the Detroit Lions in the 1930s, died of cancer in Oklahoma City Saturday at 66.

Gutowsky, a star athlete at Oklahoma City University, joined the Portsmouth Spartans of the National Football League in 1932. When the team moved to Gutowsky Detroit in 1934, he became one of the original Lions. In 1936, Gutowsky set a single-season team rushing record that lasted 24 years. His 827 yards in 12 games wasn't bettered until Nick Pietrosante ran for 872 in 14 games in 1960.
