Jobs Hit Record In 1953 There were more jobs and fewer jobless in Michigan in 1953 ever before in peacetime history, the director of the Michigan Employment Security Commission said Friday. JUNE CLIMAXED the state's record year. In that month, 2,790,000 men and women were engaged all classes of pations field, factory and occurprofessional and self-employed.

Oakland Macomb The auto Industry employed 43 per cent of all workers in manufacturing---and an additional 12 cent were working in auto feeder plants--in April, May and June. "The upward trend was halted In Horton said, "when General Motors Livonia transmission plant was destroyed fire, resulting in a loss of jobs." UNEMPLOYMENT by year's end had reached more than five per cent of the state labor force. Horton said there was little chance of a marked reduction in unemployment in the next few months.

During the year, unemployment claims dropped to 38. mildon dollars, compared with 820,000 in 1952. Horton said the Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund grew to 445 million dollars in 1953.
