Hershey's character, the leading lady who once slept with the director and is now treated like a child by him, is least defined of the three, but she alone seems to understand the game and has enthusiasm to keep it going. "The Stunt Man" is an exhilarating way to fill your head for a few hours, and Rush, who last gave us the popular but god-awful comedy, "Freebie and the Bean," has proven himself a master of visual sleight of hand. STUNT MAN, from Page 1B American Film, It is certainly one of this year's most original and visually invigorating "The Stunt Man" is the story of a fugitive (Steve Railsback) who wanders onto a movie set and is given refuge by an egomaniacal director (Peter O'Toole) and turned into a $600-a-day stunt man. It is a simple bargain. O'Toole, with only three days left to shoot in the coastal Southern California village, needs a replacement for the stunt man who just died in his film's crucial scene; Railsback is desperate for cover and willing to do almost anything, including risking his life, to find it.

If that seems confusing, give yourself a break. Nothing in this film is quite what it seems, which is Rush's point about life itself.

The information upon which we act is not always the truth, Rush tells us pictorially. When we view everything in context when the camera draws away the reality is often different than the illusion, and we find that we were too quick to judge. We step through Rush's looking glass by way of the fugitive's confused point of view. He is as surprised as we are at the events he is drawn into, as skeptical about the motives of the mad genius O'Toole and the film star (Barbara Hershey) he falls in love with. It is a film more memorable for its scenes than for its narrative soul, but it would be like giving away the endings of a series of mysteries to describe more than I already have.

They are clever cinematic tricks, occasionally fun, sometimes maddening, always surprising. THE STORY ITSELF is not soundly rooted in logic, nor is the reality plausibly carried out. But Rush has created such a freewheeling visual environment that none of that matters much. Taking this too seriously is like drawing teleological inferences from a roller coaster ride. Better you just hang on.

As the flamboyant, godlike director, O'Toole turns in his best performance in more than a decade, saving his Jugular-bulging oratorical temper tantrums for the right moments and giving us a character who gingerly' straddles the ridge between sane compassion and reckless obsession. Railsback, the twitchy Vietnam veteran full of nasal whininess and nervous energy, comes off as slightly wacky humor." -GENE SHALIT, NBC-TV "HAWNeeedemonstrates a wit and style that make her a pleasure to observe UNI HI 1 1 XIIIANPI DAI! "But it's a terrible catch-22 you can't get parts unless you're hot, and you can't get hot unless you're working." Hershey was not in a good mood for her interview. Her voice was usually a monotone, she rarely laughed, she complained that she had answered too many questions too many times. "You caught me in a down moment this isn't the happiest I get," she said.

But, she added, "I love the movie life for all the disappointments and. disillusionments I talk about, I'm addicted. I'm an actor I'm not a writer, I'm not a director, I have no aspirations that way." Hershey said she spends her free time worrying about what her next job will be whether she'll get the part, and whether the final product will be something that's both professionally and personally worthwhile. You never know what a film is like until you see it even if you're in it, she said. jirnm- 6,45.
