Bruno Gerussi is a pleasant Ariel, a pixie who helps do the wizard's bidding. He scampers about so enthusiastically that one feels automatically like shouting after him: "Now Ariel, walk, don't run what will the people downstairs think?" You should find it fascinating." an Italian duke who is cast up on an island with his daughter after being set adrift by evil forces. FORTUNATELY, he is a magician, not effective enough to get back to Italy, but sufficiently crafty to eke out a comfortable living. Eventually the girl grows to young womanhood and his enemies are delivered into his hands. William Ilutt is the wise Prospero, the magician. His performance was well-received by the capacity audience, but he didn't really get going until well toward the end.

He finally does come to a moving moment when he has to be rebuked by a spritt who reminds him that he is as human as his victims. Miss Henry, the lovely daughter of the musician, has delica-te moments of under- playing which seem so difficult for the Stratford players this year. HER STAGE boyfriend is played by Peter Donat, a prince who is set to carrying logs to prove the sincerity of his passion to serve. It's a matter of direction, of course, but anybody who can't lug a log any better than Donat did Wednesday night is not strong enough ts marry. On of the features of Tempest is Caliaban, the half-man, half-beast who is retained by the wizard as an odd-jobs monster.

John Colicos, star of this year's "Taming of the Shrew" and last year's "Co-riolanus," attempts to make more of this role than there BY LOUIS COOK Free Press Staff Writer STRATFORD, Ont. A more heavy-handed 'treatment of Shakespeare's "Tempest" than was presented Wednesday night at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival would be difficult to imagine. For all its noise and flond-ity, it had moments of great charm. But three straight nights of tearing passions to tatters is too much. THE FESTIVAL opened Monday night with" Macbeth" and continued Tuesday with the opening of "Trie aming of the Shrew." These two, plus "Te will be pres-ent repertory here through the summer.

The "Temp- st" is.a rich-lv-woven Dlav that ward the end of Shakespeare's life and in some ways is to Shakespeare what the Ninth (Choral) Symphony is to Beethoven. has one of the most gentle affectionate comments of all playwriting "Oh brave new world which has such brave people in it." One of the mitigating circumstances Wednesday night was the statement of this line and others by Martha who played Miranda and is one of the few people around who wasn't laying it on with a brick trowel. She was also the prettiest in sight, a very pleas-ant coincidence. Jimmy Stewart is the harassed father and grandfather who goes about gluing situations back together again. Maureen O'Hara is his wife, a very fetching grandmother. THERE ARE a good many Corner Movies Here are some better-than-average films being shown currently in your neighborhood and drive-in movie houses. BEN HER This greatest in the recent line of movie spectaculars is bringing its wide-screen excitement to a number of theaters around this area. Adopted from Lew Wallace's timeless classic about the conflict between Christianity and paganism in the Roman Empire, the William Wyler production won 11 Academy Awards.

It made Charlton Heston a byword among the chariot trade. BLACK TIGHTS This is one for lovers of the dance, and for anyone who loves beauty, for that matter. It is a series of ballet vignettes, starring Cyd Charisse, Moira Shearer, Zizi Jeanmaire and Roland Petit names to reckon with. TWO WOMEN This is the picture that brought Sophia Loren the Academy Award as best actress of the year. It shows what happens to a mother and her young daughter caught in the ebb and tide of war in Italy.

It's for the adults. IN TER-ROR This is one of those psychopath suspense i 1-lers, starring Glenn Ford and Lee Remick. In it" the FBI uses a beautiful girl, Miss Remick, to trap a master criminal. Also around are old ones like "Mr. Roberts," "Battle Cry," "The Naked and the Dead." For where and when any picture showing in the De-torit area can be seen, see the Free Tress movie guide on" the next-to-last page of today paper.

SrENCE! drearily predictable gimmicks in "Vacation." There is a temperamental water pump. The beach house in which the group vacations is a dear old wreck. Next door is the beach sexpot, played with fantastic cleavage by Valerie Varda. The bathroom door knob falls off, trapping Jimmy in- side with a house guet, Marie Wilson, a not unpleasant fate. Miss Wilson and John Mc-Giver provide some great moments as a stuffy couple discovered getting roaring drunk in secret after the rest of the house has retired.

ANOTHER series of pleasant moments is provided by a new girl in the film, Lauri Peters, whose teen-age social problems are complicated further by her new braces. She strikes up an engaging summer romance with Fabian, an amiable young man. The Hobbses' sons-in-law are rather ill-tempered additions to the party, but there are some memorable scenes between Stewart and his permissive grandson in which they glare at each other with mutual hostility. "The little creep," Stewart muses. ft T1 -if And there's more' Civil War cannon Costume parades If II 013 Civil War .1 Bailed A soecial Droaram of colorful Civil Wor i ballodi, featuring populor folk-linger Jt Bob Brando All teams the year's uproarious, romantic 7 J) i CARS' GRANT D0KS DAT the color ond excitement of America's past in this action-packed event!
