By SANDY McCLURE Frea Press Staff Writer Billy Marrone was the name he used in the ring, during the boxing heydays of the 1920s and '30s. He counted Joe Louis as a comrade and up-and-coming boxers as his friends. But in real life he was 5-foot 7-inch, 135-pound William D'Angelo, a featherweight, and a city and state champion before turning professional. He died Tuesday of a massive heart attack while watching his son compete in a track meet.

He was 67. BORN AND RAISED on Detroit's east side, like Louis, he was known for his refusal to back away from overpowering opponents. Unlike Louis, he lacked the strength to become a major force in professional boxing. But he had an abundance of courage. "IT WAS A TYPICAL Marrone victory," reads one of his press clippings about his 1938 attempted professional comeback.

"Marrone never clinched, never was the first to cease punching in the frequent rallies, took four low punches unflinchingly, constantly pressed his more adept foe and often made him cover and retreat, and went on to take eight of the 10 rounds." HIS ABILITY as a feather-weight boxer took him to city and state championships in 1929 and to the Olympic trials for the games in Los Angeles in 1932. But his professional career was short-lived. He worked most of his life at the Michigan Boiler from which he retired three Loomis; grandfather of Julie; deer brother of Mrs. Joan Bartmen, Mrj.
