Gillette follows a sterling list of U-M kickers from recent years Mike Lantry, Ali Haji-Sheikh, Bob Bergeron but ne is carving his own niche. And he has a dream. "I've had the dream almost every Friday night before the game," he said.

"I'm in there with seconds left and the game on the line. It's tough that way because you're eitherihero or goat. I want that situation. I have tlft confidence to make it." MIKE GILLETTE, from Page 1D he's starting." Gillette came to Michigan from St. Joseph High on a football scholarship and will play catcher for U-M's baseball team, too.

He was an all-state quarterback, punter and placekicker in high school, and Schembechler thinks he also might have been an effective college quarterback. Kicking has always been Gillette's forte. He began kicking straight-on but found that that hurt his foot. So he watched the NFL's kickers on TV and learned to kick that way. WHEN SCHEMBECHLER came to his home for a visit last January, Gillette said, he decided that night that Michigan was the place he'd get his kicks.

"I came in third-string all the way, but I expect a lot of myself," he said. "I don't mean it as cockiness, but I didn't want to be the typical freshman. I was scared, but I took control of that and the pressure and told myself I was going to win the job." "He's always been ambitious, aggressive," said Gillette's father, Vic, who played professional softball for 16 years. "When he vas about five or seven I used to take hi. to games with me and he learned a lot about being competitive.
