The demonstrators were calling for the reappointment of Joseph Dulin as principal of St. Martin de Porres High School, charging that he was not rehired by the school's board because he Dulin was black and "hard to handle." Cardinal Dearden met with the protesters about 7 a.m. and promised to try to arrange a meeting between them and the school board Monday or early Tuesday. The band planned to continue its sit-in until "a solution" is reached, a spokeswoman said.

Edith Irving 'Raving' NEW YORK (AP) Edith Irving, who goes to jail Monday for helping her husband steal $750.000 from the McGraw-Hill publishing firm with a phony autobiography of Howard Hughes, said Sunday that she is "raving mad at the Mrs. Irving said in an interview published in the New York Daily News that when she and her husband, Clifford, hatched their scheme of Swiss bank accounts under false names to appropriate money intended for billionaire Hughes, she never dreamed she might go to prison. "At that time I thought, if it gets to the point where they find out it's a she said, find out it's a she said, "why, he just gives the money back." But although the Irvings pleaded guilty to grand larceny and conspiracy, and offered to restore what was left andhe $10.000 money, fine, got and she years was sentenced to two months plus a two-year suspended sentence and a $10,000 fine. DURING THE interview, Mrs. Irving said she and her husband "could make it if we were given a chance." She added bitterly: "Why don't they give us a chance? They could have us do something useful for the community-say, work in a hospital every day for a year.

We could wipe floors or do work like that. Then our family would stay intact. "We can't do any work in prison. We can't make money; it's all so useless." Mrs. Irving said her sons, 4 and 2 years.

old, have been told that she is going to Switzerland on business "and they can't go because it's cold and rainy there." Irving's sentence is to begin after Mrs. Irving comes out of jail so one of the parents will be with the boys. Irving was present at the interview, but sat morosely quiet. When the interviewer asked if they would do it all over again, he replied: "Are you mad?" Great Lakes Water Pact Is Questioned ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) William G.

Davis, premier of Ontario, expressed concern Sunday night over whether the U.S. Congress would allocate funds for a U.S.-Canada water-quality agreement for Great Lakes. The premier noted in an address to the Kiwanis International convention here that the pact is considered an executive agreement and Congress was in no way obligated to authorize funds to help clean up the Great Lakes. "While we are happy with the philosophical intent of the agreement," Davis said, "and while we do not for one moment question the integrity of the American pledge, we nonetheless hope the United States administration will be in a position to raise the necessary funds that will enable it to live up to its stated commitment." agreement was signed by President Nixon and Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau during Mr. Nixon's visit to Canada last April.
