4B DETROIT FREE PRESSTUESDAY, MAY 12, 1998 NATIONAL FOREIGN DEATHS Earle Perkins: Musician led 6-piece band for 5 decades killings on March 16, 1968. He heard about the incident from other soldiers and talked to enough people to become convinced that a massacre had occurred. Three months after he returned home in December 1968, Mr. Ridenhour typed up what he had learned in a three-page, single-spaced letter and sent off 30 copies to Arizona's congressional delegation and other federal officials. Reporters soon took notice of Mr.

Ridenhour's unsparing account. In 1969, journalist Seymour Hersh won the Pulitzer Prize for his expose of the massacre. Mr. Ridenhour had worked as an investigative reporter in Springfield, and Phoenix before moving to the New Orleans area in 1981 to work for an alternative weekly publication. Revolutionary Party's following.

He came in third behind Balaguer and Bosch in the 1990 presidential election. In 1994, he accused Balaguer of stealing the election and threatened to paralyze the country by calling a nationwide strike. Bowing to international pressure, Balaguer called a new election in 1996. Mr. Pena Gomez won the first round of voting but fell short of the majority needed to win outright.

Ron Ridenhour Disclosed My Lai massacre Ron Ridenhour, 52, a soldier turned journalist who first reported the slaughter of 500 Vietnamese villagers by U.S. troops at My Lai, died of a heart attack Sunday in Metairie, La. Mr. Ridenhour was a door gunner on an observation helicopter that flew over the village a few days after the Jose Pena Gomez Dominican politician Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, 61, who was abandoned by his family as a 2-year-old but rose to be a major political leader in the Dominican Republic, died Sunday of a lung edema in San Cristobalin. Mr.

Pena Gomez, a social democrat, spent most of his political life battling two political strongmen, Rafael Trujillo and Joaquin Balaguer. The longtime leader of the opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party, Mr. Pena Gomez was favored to win the race for mayor of Santo Domingo in an election that will take place Saturday. Mr. Pena Gomez was mayor of Santo Domingo from 1982 to 1986 but lost in his three bids for the national presidency in 1990, 1994 and 1996.

Victory would have made him the country's first black president The 91-year-old musician died Wednesday of heart disease at St. John Hospital in Detroit. The band really hit it off," said his daughter. "They liked the guy on the stage and the word was out "His style was very peppy. He liked fast music, but he played the slow ones, too." Mr.

Perkins lived in St. Clair Shores for about the past 10 years, and had lived most of his life in Grosse Pointe Farms and Grosse Pointe Shores. His six-piece band played in the Detroit area as well as in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The band decked out in powder blue jackets featured singer Judy Carroll and performed mostly big-band classics. Born in Manitoba, Canada, Mr.

Perkins took clarinet lessons as a teenager. He later played in studio bands in Windsor and for various dance bands in the Detroit area. He was offered music scholarships to a couple of universities, but he wanted to perform, not study, Brownscombe said. Mr. Perkins also enjoyed woodworking and sailing on Lake St.

Clair. Other survivors'are his wife, Rita; sons Dennis and David, and eight grandchildren. Services were held Monday. By nirai Warikoo Free Press Staff Writer In 1926, Earle J. Perkins started playing clarinet for a 12-piece circus band in Indiana.

But the band went broke and disbanded. Mr. Perkins then went to New York and was invited to play with the John Philip Sou-sa band. But after Sousa died in the early 1930s, the band disbanded. A disappointed Mr.

Perkins headed back Earle Perkins home to the Detroit area. "He decided the only way to make it work was to have his own band so he could his run his own ship," his daughter, Judy Brownscombe, said Monday. Mr. Perkins switched to saxophone, formed the Earle Perkins Orchestra, and performed almost every Friday and Saturday night for the next five decades at weddings, social events and golf clubs. Mr.

Perkins was the band's director until he retired in the 1980s. Leo Burton Restaurateur Leo R. Burton, 68, the builder and owner of several restaurants in the Detroit area, died Thursday of esophageal cancer at his Redford Township home. Mr. Burton lived in Redford Township for about eight years and in Livonia before that for about 25 years.

He built the Windjammer Lounge, a Livonia steak house, and owned it from 1965 to 1991. It's called Jamies Jammer II today. Most recently, Mr. Burton was part owner of Sandy's by the Beech Lounge in Redford Township. Born in Dearborn, he was a plumbing contractor in the 1950s before he started building and owning restaurants.

"He would be the host, the bus-boy, whatever it took to treat you right," a friend, Mike Doherty, said Monday. "He loved serving people." Mr. Dalton also helped build The Stables, in Livonia, the Moby Dick Lounge in Dearborn, and the Trophy Room Pub in Dearborn Heights. Most of his establishments were bars and grills that served up hamburgers, chili, and soup. Survivors include daughters Peggy Sudut, Cindy and Ann; sons Steve, Terry and Michael; one sister, and six grandchildren.

A service will be at 11 a.m. today at Corsi's Restaurant, 27910 W. Seven Mile, Livonia. Burial will follow in Parkview Memorial Cemetery in Livonia. Harry Theisen Real estate attorney Harry W.

Theisen, 88, a retired real estate attorney who loved Monet paintings, died Wednesday of pneumonia at St. John Hospital in Detroit. Mr. Theisen, a longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, ran his own private practice in probate and real estate law in Harry Theisen a Detroit office on the east side. He was born in Detroit and graduated from the University of Detroit since Ulises Heureaux, a dictator of Haitian descent who was assassinated in 1899.

For much of his life Mr. Pena Gomez struggled against racial prejudice that is prevalent toward Haitians, the Dominican Republic's poorer neighbors on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. He was a supporter of Juan Bosch, the leftist leader of the Dominican Revolutionary Party. Bosch won the presidency in 1962 but was ousted in an army coup. Pena Gomez made his name in 1965 by going on radio and inciting a popular uprising to demand Bosch return to power.

Leftists in the army revolted, and President Lyndon B. Johnson sent 23,000 Marines to prevent a Cuban-style revolution. With U.S. backing, a conservative former president, Joaquin Balaguer, was elected in 1966. Mr.

Pena Gomez worked closely with Bosch to build the Dominican Death CALDRON JOSEPH Beloved husband ot Angellta. Dearest brother ot Josephine, Mary and Lenora. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation Tuesday 1-9 p.m. Rosary Tuesday 6 p.m.

Kucharek, 69, a retired U.S. post office clerk who was certain that UFOs and aliens exist, died March 16 of colon cancer at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He retired in 1990. Along with his first wife, the late Irene, he formed the Detroit UFO Information and Research Center in the 1960s. The group held meetings at banks and the Detroit Institute of Arts, wrote a monthly newsletter and invited several noted UFO believers from around the country. "It wasn't a belief for him," said his wife, Sharon. "He didn't say, I believe that UFOs exist; he said, I know that they exist" Mr.

Kucharek said he had spotted a few UFOs during his life, but he never relied on personal stories to convince others that they exist "He talked about the research and facts, not himself," his wife said. The group faded in the late '70s and had a brief revival in 1981, but no longer exists. Mr. Kucharek served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He later became a dance instructor and taught ballroom dancing and the boogie woogie. In 1976, he became a minister in the Church of Ageless Wisdom.
