Detroit Library readies for big blast The downtown branch of the Detroit Public Library plans to close its doors temporarily and move its most popular collections to other locations in preparation for the demolition of the nearby J.L.

Hudson building. The library board will meet Feb. 17 and is expected to discuss efforts to secure the 66-year-old, two-story limestone building before the Hudson demolition this year. A date for the library's closing could be decided at next week's meeting. Library director Maurice Wheeler wants to move the branch's international collection and the collection for the blind and disabled to other sites while the branch is closed.

Its collection of daily newspapers from around the world could also be relocated. Pat McClary, the library's marketing director, said there are absolutely no plans to close the branch permanently. "The architecture, the design of the building is absolutely fabulous and Dr. Wheeler intends to open the downtown library once we gel past the risk of what is going on around it at Hudson's," he said.
