19, TRAGEDY DETROIT FREE Here is a glimpse of some of the passengers I killed in Sunday's crash of Northwest Flight 255: TOM BARBARIO a AGE: 25 HOMETOWN: Lansing STATUS: Single a I OCCUPATION: Student at Arizona State University. WHY ON FLIGHT: Returning to Arizona with one of his best friends, Patrick Tallarico of Lansing, for vacation. ANTHONY BAGNATO AGE: 50 I HOMETOWN: Scottsdale, Ariz. a STATUS: Married with one daughter, 22, and two sons, one a sophomore in college, the other graduated from college a few years ago. His wife, Jan, was also on the Employe of Hamilton Test Systems in Scottsdale.

WHY ON FLIGHT: Had gone to Maine to visit his wife, who was on a business trip. The couple had spent a weekend with friends in Boston and were heading back to Arizona with a connection in Detroit. PERSONAL GLIMPSE: Their daughter, Jennifer, 22, of Flagstaff, said, "They did everything together. They went to the movies once a week and held hands. They were wonderful people.

I'm getting married in a week and this hits kind of hard." JAN BAGNATO AGE: 50 I HOMETOWN: Scottsdale STATUS: Married to Anthony Bagnato. I OCCUPATION: Office manager of National Environmental Training Association in Scottsdale. I PERSONAL GLIMPSE: "The last time saw her, it was like something psychic or something," said her boss, George Kinias. Kinias was teasing her about something, then "gave her a big hug and said, 'Do enjoy yourself and I will see you Tuesday morning'. I felt very close and emotional to her because I'd never given her a big hug.

I'm glad I did." KEN BELL AGE: 28 a HOMETOWN: Canton Township. STATUS: Married. a OCCUPATION: Worked at General Motors Milford proving ground. WHY ON FLIGHT: Was headed on business to GM's Mesa, proving ground. WILLIAM BEST AGE: 36 I HOMETOWN: Phoenix.

STATUS: Married with three children; all were aboard Flight 255. I OCCUPATION: National accounts manager for Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors. Worked out of his home in Arizona. WHY ON FLIGHT: Catching connecting flight home from Syracuse, N.Y., where he had vacationed for a week with his family and his wife's family. 1 PERSONAL GLIMPSE: Was to move to Dallas next week.

Tim Westphall of Dallas had been looking forward to working with Best, whom he had met 15 years ago when they worked for Detroit Diesel in Michigan. "'He was a very likeable person who liked sports, especially baseball and hockey," Westphall said. "Lately he spent a lot of time with his family. OCCUPATION: Professor in MSU's department of computer science and department of metallurgy, mechanics and material science. Joined MSU in 1947 as an instructor engineering department. WHY ON FLIGHT: Traveling to Tucson, where for the past five years he has been a consultant for Hughes Aircraft working with the company to develop robotics technologies. a I PERSONAL GLIMPSE: Lawrence Von Tersch, dean of MSU's College of Engineering, said Burnett was "a first-class" individual who got high marks from students and fellow instructors.

"He was always concerned with the welfare of students, and his summer employment was really not for money but rather to bring back new ideas to the instructional program," Von Tersch said. She did more than sales; she was part of the management, directing shipping. She was the kind of person who recognized what had to be done and did it." PERSONAL GLIMPSE: Dresch would have celebrated his 23d wedding anniversary on Aug. 29. "'My husband was probably the biggest car buff that ever came into this world," said Patricia Dresch. "From the time he was a little kid, he drew pictures of really high-class cars. He collected car magazines, he loved working in the car industry, he was a great guy and good at everything.

I'm really going to miss him." GREGG A. FILES 1 AGE: 35. a HOMETOWN: Phoenix, but grew up in Cleveland. I STATUS: Single. OCCUPATION: Vice-president of leasing for Wilshire Commercial Brokerage in Phoenix.

WHY ON FLIGHT: Had been on a twoweek vacation with his parents and his older brother, Marc, at his parents' vacation home in Harbor Springs. PERSONAL GLIMPSE: Files' boss, Mike Powers, said Files told him that he and his brother, who also lives in Phoenix, told him they always flew in separate planes. "It turned out to be quite a prophetic statement," said Powers. Marc Files said he stayed on in Michigan with his parents. Sunday morning, Gregg Files ate lunch with his parents and drove himself to Detroit to catch Flight 255.

ROBERT W. GAINES AGE: 70 HOMETOWN: Born in Crete, south of Chicago, he lived in Rochester Hills. FAMILY STATUS: Married, wife, Elinor; three daughters, Kathleen Boulware, Jennifer Thorkildsen and Joanne; two sons, Peter and Robert Jeffrey; four grandchildren, and a brother. "'He could always take a very difficult situation and rationalize it and straighten it out, and bring everybody to the frame of mind to solve whatever the problems may be and bring solutions."
