DETROIT FREE DECEMBER 29, 1988 9D OBITUARIES Lawyer and sportsman Daniel Hodgman brought skills to bridge table TERESA BLOSSOM Free Press Staff Writer Friends and relatives knew to be wary when they sat down to play bridge with Daniel Hodgman. Mr. Hodgman loved the game and became a master of duplicate bridge. "He'd give you a heck of a game. Only the best could play with him," said his daughter-in-law, Mary Rose Hodgman.

An attorney who practiced for 50 years, including 40 in Detroit, Mr. Hodgman, of Grosse Pointe Woods, died Monday of natural causes. He was 79. Mr. Hodgman graduated from the University of Michigan law school in 1938.

He served as a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy in 1943-47 and later became a member of the Order of World Wars, a group for veterans of the two world wars. He helped chart the future of Grosse Pointe when he served on its planning commission in the 1960s. He was a former president of the Grosse Pointe Kiwanis Club. For about 30 years, Mr. Hodgman taught law at U-M, Wayne State University and the University of Detroit.

He also had a private practice until Parkinson's disease forced him to slow down and he joined Fitzgerald, Hodgman, Cox, Cawthorne McMahon, of Detroit, where his son William is a partner. Failing health also forced Mr. Hodgman to give up sporting activities he loved, including curling on Sundays. "He was considered the minister of the sinners club because that's what the men did instead of going to church," his daughter-in-law said. Other survivors include his wife Constance; three other sons, Jeffrey, Philip and Mark, and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral service is at 11 a.m. today at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Woods. Burial will follow in Mt.
